Are you having problems with depression or anxiety? If you're waiting until you're exhausted to avoid certain thoughts or staying up too late because you're feeling self-destructive, you should consider speaking with your doctor.
The most important thing you can do is to make a firm commitment to sleep. Eliminate excuses.
Remove distractions from your bedroom, like TV. Try to make some changes if your environment bothers you - like with light (better curtains) or sound (try fabric hangings or leave a fan running) if that bothers you. Make your bedroom a pleasing place - have you tried new soft sheets or an air freshener?
Next - set a firm bedtime. It doesn't have to be equal to 8 hours sleep immediately. Try setting it for 2am tonight or tomorrow. No TV, no internet, no books, no paying bills, cleaning house, or any other excuses. This will be your bedtime every night, even weekends.
Evaluate your lifestyle. Are you using caffeine or taking prescription meds that could cause insomnia? Avoid those in the afternoon and evening. Are you doing a lot of mental exertion right before bed? Do you leave a light on at night?
When you wake up in the morning, turn every light on or go for a walk in the morning light. Using light will help reset your internal clock. Dim the lights when you are getting ready for bed and keep the room dark when you sleep . This is why staying up late on the computer or TV can be negative - the bright light can trick your brain.
If you're laying in bed and can't sleep, try lying in a position that's comfortable for you. Starting from your head or your feet, isolate your small muscle groups (i.e. fingers then hands then forearms, then upper arms), tightening and then releasing completely so they go limp.
If you must get up, then get out of your bedroom and do something else conducive to sleeping - like taking a hot bath or shower, exercising, or eating a little something (I like tea or cocoa). Then try again.
I would stay away from trying external aids like alcohol or cold medicine. If you want OTC meds, be aware there are 2 main ingredients used - diphenhydramine (Benadryl) or doxylamine. If you are like me and Benadryl makes you hyper instead of drowsy, go for the other one. =) If you feel the need for OTC meds for longer than a week, you should be be making an appointment with your doctor immediately.
A doctor can not only help you figure out if there is something else hiding behind your insomnia, but may be able to prescribe something stronger to help you get over your initial problems and settle into a normal pattern of sleep.
Good luck!

go to sleep at 11 PM--turn off all lights, TV, etc and just lie there in the quiet thinking pleasant thoughts like a quiet beach, or a two week vacation in the tropics. You will drift off as your body resets its biological clock but you must do this for at least a week or more until you get used to doing it every night--then stick to it and you will wake up well rested and ready for work.

There is a couple of options. You could have insomnia, which you should talk to your doctor about. But to help you should shut everything off (tv, music, lights) about 45 minutes before you plan to go to sleep. Its a brain thing im not quite sure how it works but its supposed to help you fal asleep and sleep better. But if you still cant sleep i sugges quite a few energy drinks. lol

Go to Walgreen's or Wal-Mart, and buy some SAFE, NON HABIT FORMING pills called sleep aid. Take 2 before you want to be asleep, and make sure you have 8 to 9 hours for sleep, this will ease you off to sleep gently and you will sleep good!

Try meditation cd's at your regular bed time, and drink a cup of chamomile tea. Works wonders. Also, get rid of any stress in your life.
