Rock/alternative, you say?

We'll start with classic (or, rather, not so recent) rock...I'll name a couple of my favorites and, with luck, they will inspire you to further investigate the bands behind them.

NIB (if only for the bass solo at the beginning), War Pigs, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Sweet Leaf - Black Sabbath
Stealin', Gypsy - Uriah Heep
Down for the Last Time - Head East
Blinded by the Light - Manfred Mann (cover, granted)
Hurt So Good, Jack and Diane, Little Pink Houses - John Mellencamp
The Chain, Gold Dust Woman, Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac (a little too pop, perhaps)
Cemetary Gates - Pantera (are we calling them classic?)
Rainbow In the Dark, Holy Diver - Dio
Walk of Life, Sultans of Swing, Money For Nothing - Dire Straits
ANYTHING by Rush
Spacetruckin' - Deep Purple (I will not endore Smoke on the Water)
Hotel California, New Kid in Town - Eagles
Somebody to Love, White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane
Breakdown, Last Dance with Mary Jane, Free Fallin - Tom Petty and the Heatbreakers
ANYTHING Led Zeppelin
ANYTHING AC/DC
Black Magic Woman, Oye Como Va - Santana
Take the Money and Run, The Joker - Steve Miller Band
Tin Man, Ventura Highway - America
ANYTHING Metallica (pre-rehab...so don't really bother after the mid-90's)
Let it Ride - Bachman Turner Overdrive
Guns and Roses are very hit or miss - fun, either way.
Roundabout - Yes...actually, anything Yes is great
La Grange, Sharp Dressed Man, Tush - ZZ Top
Baba O'Riley, Who are You?, Behind Blue Eyes - The Who
Hellbent for Leather, Green Manalishi - Judas Priest (he and Axl Rose from G&R sound quite similar in certain pitches)
Cryin', Sweet Emotion, Dream On - Aerosmith
Beast of Burden, I Miss You, Sympathy for the Devil, Paint it Black - Rolling Stones
Running with the Devil, Panama - Van Halen
Dr. Feelgood, Girls, Girls, Girls, - Motley Crue
Hold on Loosely - .38 Special
Three Steps, Free Bird (duh), Sweet Home Alabama - Lynard Skynard
Heart of Gold, Old Man - Neil Young
Riding the Storm Out, Keep on Loving You - REO Speedwagon
The Night with You?, Winds of Change, Rock you Like a Hurricane - Scorpions
Here I Go Again - Whitesnake
Something to Believe In - Poison
Go to Hell, Feed My Frankenstein, Welcome to my Nightmare - Alice Cooper (again, can't do much wrong)
My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama - Frank Zappa
These Dreams, Magic Man, Barracuda - Heart (pretty damn good, actually)
I Stole Your Love, I Wanna Rock and Roll all Night, Firehouse, Lick it up- KISS
Midnight Blue - Lou Gramm
Comfortably Numb, Welcome to the Machine, Hey You - Pink Floyd (one of my favorites)
Fat Bottomed Girls, Bohemian Rhapsody, We Will Rock You - Queen (let's face it, you gotta love 'em)
Rock and Roll Part II - Gary Glitter (whee!)
Long Train Running, Black Water - Doobie Brothers
Wanted: Dead or Alive - Bon Jovi

...and I have only very slightly scratched the surface. However, on to more modern things.

Man in the Box, Would? - Alice in Chains
Best of You, Never Surrender, One by One - Foo Fighters (though I really don't think the Foo Fighters can do any wrong)
ANYTHING Nirvana
Seed, ADIDAS - KoRn (I gave up on them after Follow the Leader, but their newest stuff may be okay if they've regained any sense...I hated the Issues album).
A Place in the Sun (album) - Lit (it's an essential, strangely)
Homesick, Runaway Train - Soul Asylum
Hey Jealousy, Found out About You - Gin Blossoms (kinda pop again, but oh well)
Jail House, Santeria, What I Got - Sublime (kinda punk/reggae, but worthwhile...I think EVERYONE knows the words to Santeria...)
Closer, Hurt (though I think Johnny Cash's cover was better) - Nine Inch Nails
ANYTHING Rammstein
Rybecki, Greet the Machine, Fractured - 20 Dead Flower Children
Disarm, Daphne Descends (and the remix), Bullet with Butterfly Wings, Perfect - Smashing Pumpkins
ANYTHING Everclear (though they were strongest at first, I'd stop after the Afterglow album, personally)
ANYTHING Red Hot Chili Peppers (HUGE talent from every member, been around for ages while remaining relevant, sound always changing but staying distinctly Chili Pepper!)
Long Way Down, Bullet Proof, Naked, Slide, Amigone - goo Goo Dolls
ANYTHING Rage Against the Machine
Black Hole Sun - Sound Garden
ANYTHING Stone Temple Pilots
Fall to Pieces - Velvet Revolver
Cochise, Show Me How to Live - Audioslave
Jeremy, Black, Alive, Evenflo, Do the Evolution, Lowlight - Pearl Jam
Graduate, 1000 Julys, Thanks a Lot, Semi-Charmed Life - Third Eye Blind
All I Want - Toad the Wet Sprocket
Loser, Devil's Haircut, Where it's at, Sexx Laws- Beck (he's pretty funky and original)
Why II, Shine - Collective Soul
When Dolphins Cry, Lightning Crashes - Live
Dragula, Feel So Numb - Rob Zombie (I can't even say that he's talented...I can only say that I like his sound)
One Headlight, Sixth Avenue Heartache - Wallflowers
ANYTHING Bloodhound Gang, because I condone it.
Zombie - Cranberries
ANYTHING Chumbawamba (specifically, Tubthumper album)
Wish You Were Here, Drive, Anti-Gravity, Familiar - Incubus
ANYTHING Lords of Acid (yay! can't even explain it)

...and the list goes on, and on, and on. I'm going to drop it here, but that's a fairly decent scope on the rock/alt, at least for now. *smiles* It'll get you started, at any rate. Again, I know that I didn't dive deeply into any one band, and that I've left many out. Sorry for that.

Enjoy.

heya!
I suggest you listen to this really great singer called Miley Cyrus! You might have heard of her before! She even has her own TV show, Hannah Montana! Some of her good songs are Nobody's Perfect, G.N.O, True Friends, One in a Million!

Or, of course, a band that was really really famous a long time ago is ABBA. Thats the initials of the band members. They have really cool songs. Not rock, but still really nice! Their most famous song is Mamma Mia! It's also the title of a broadway play which featured all ABBA's songs!
