i went to sears.com and found a 12inch bench 5 speed drill press for $200 and a Bench Mortiser Press for 220ish.

Can the mortiser be used as a regular drill press? O can the mortiser only be used with mortiser chisel bits.

Flip the coin, can the sears 12inch 5 speed drill press be used as a mortiser, as in does it accept mortisser bits

thanks

Since Sears was taken over by K Mart; which still confuses the heck out of me; your question does as well. Have you connected with Sears; asking the Q? No offense; but hopefully someone who sells the products knows their product.

I have no real clue; although it seems to me that unless you're commercial; and/or doing a quantity of Joints; the better tool to have; in a general sense might be the drill press. I want to assume that unlike a "Shop Master" the mortise press is not so versatile; or multi functional? But that's just one mans opinion.

Check out this add-on for the drill press...

I use a chisel when I need to mortise, hand skills are a good thing to have.
Drill press...I use it all of the time...very useful tool.
It depends on what you do.
I do woodwork on yachts, and the need for a mortising tool (besides a chisel) just isn't there.
Good luck.
