But we all have to pay our part right? Whether we agree with what it's being spent on or not. I mean I don't need the Police, but I have to pay taxes to support that wasteful program.

Common Sense

I didn't say anything about the Fire Department,I need them I don't have the tools to fight a fire. I on the other hand have never once needed Police intervention in 39 years, not once. Just a theoretical for all those who think they only need to pay taxes for that which they support.

I'm not mad about paying for this war. As far as I can tell it has been a success. Sinse it began there have been no more successful attacks on our nations turff. This has not been without great losses though, many have died. However our men have delt a powerful blow to the terror forces. Someone in an earlier response said Osama is in Afganistan. We actually have no idea where he is, and our best intell actually says Afgahnistan is probably the last place he is at. Anyway, I do not feel the war is pointless for us or those in Iraq. Liberals cling to the fact that there have been no weapons of mass destruction found. Well, you cannot prove that they are not there. If you gave me a piece of land as big as California and an army with billions of dollars and technology (they actually did have a lot of Technology on their side) I'll bet I could hide a load of weapons pretty darn good. Also, the reason you keep hearing them complain about the weapons is because it is the only thing they can cling to. There are many other note worthy reasons. Those who say also that the people of that nation were fine the way they were have probably not lived in a third world nation. Maybe some have but I'll bet the majority have not taken that opportunity. I have had that opportunity and watch the nation of Indonesia suffer and fall appart right before my eyes. It was horrible to see all the suffering. Iraq was much worse then Indonesia. So quit holding on to the fact that there are no weapons because it is the only piece of evidence to back up your own desires. War calls for sacrifice. The strong must protect the weak. Don't listen only to the one sided media. Listen to all aspects then make a decision. If you listen to one side your opinion can't be anything other then what you hear. I am glad to have my money go to the protection of the Iraq peoples. Now they aren't fed to lions and meat grinders and pools of acid. Now the mass graves have come to an end. Now those who when asked by a reporter if the world is round responded, "the world is flat." can be educated and taken out of ignorance. Now electricity and drinkable water flow through cities. Now vaccinations and medicines are available to the masses. Now money actually comes to the people from the selling of oil. Even if we were motivated by the oil, when we buy their oil they get money which helps them. Quit being narrow minded and support the troops and the people of the middle east. I am happy to have my money go to such a cause.

Police, the fire department and national security (the military), are the main priorities of the government. To keep us safe, enforce the laws and protect us from foreign and domestic threats.

One can also make the argument that our infrastructure (roads, bridges, water, sanitation etc.) should be privatized instead of being left to the government. But I disagree with that scenario. We wouldn't want bunch of different companies owning the roads, bridges, water supply, or be in charge of proper sanitation. That might cause a lot of problem.

I like to think of my taxes supporting welfare programs which many conservative oppose and their taxes supporting the war which i think is a huge mistake. If it were just a matter of money the war would not bother me that much, but the loss of life is also part of the war.

Dang those firefighters too! I've never been in a fire in my life! I don't need to pay for them with my taxes! (sarcasm)

Edit: Angel of Death, I was kidding. I agree with what you said. I was just being sarcastic. Here, have a star for the misunderstanding.

We have to pay taxes. We elect politicians to administer those funds in a manner we approve of. When the politicians do things that we disagree with we have the right to tell them of our discontent.
Some ways to do this are to
Write emails
Vote the fools out of office
Dip our hands in red paint and wave them at Congressional hearings
Paint our faces, put on loincloths and dump boxes of tea into Boston Harbor.
Everyone except bush have accepted that this war is wrong. More terribly, we will be paying for it, morally, spiritually and financially for generations.
Not only do we not have to be there, the longer we are there the more damage we do to our own country and our place in the world.

Did I miss something, or did Rae, our resident "lets let everyone pay for everyone else!" communist, just say that she doesn't want to pay for something that is bringing "equality" to a disadvantaged country?

Oh dear me, I'm coming dangerously close to flame levels. Let me cool off before I answer your question.

....Well. Someone needs to pay for it. And the Iraqi's have no money. Money doesn't grow on trees, you know!! And apparently, there's no tree that sprouts support for spending money.

What we need to do is legalize a third kind of "tree." And none of these people will complain ever again, if you catch my drift.

Tell you what....you let me keep the portion of my taxes that go to welfare , social security, bilingual education, food stamps, studies on some freakin endangered butterfly, bridges and roads named for Robert Byrd, illegal aliens getting bennies, National Endowment for the Arts, pay raises for Congress, liberal whacko socialist programs for deadbeats, and you can keep your portion that goes to National Defense.

By the way, since you won't be covered by National Defense, I'm declaring war on you, and MY military can beat up YOURS !

More liberal drivel !

So, when your house is robbed or your children are molested, or you're beat-up by a gang of thugs - you don't want there to be a means by which these people are brought to justice and taken off the streets?! The war in Iraq is one based on lies (lies crammed-down our throats by Dick Cheney and George Bush) and constant assertions that it is in response to 9-11 (which it has nothing to do with). The police allow all of us to live our dreams of freedom and to pursue happiness!
