like how did it get so popular?, like before the first movie came out in 2003, nobody ever talked about Pirates of The Caribbean, now it's become an internationally known franchise, like what made it dominate to box-office everytime the sequels came out?

I have nothing against the franchise and movies, I just never thought it would become like this popular, like Pirates of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, is like the 6th or 5th highest grossing movie of all-time, like I never thought Pirates would become an big-time movie franchise like Star Wars.

It's FUN! It's a swashbuckling adventure with pirates and more pirates, ships on the ocean, and lots of piratical talk! ARRRR, maties!

Maybe it sweeps us back to when we were kids. They are films that children, teens and adults can enjoy together. It's not a matter of how one level interprets it this way while the other sees something else. It's just a rollicking adventure when most action films have come with bullets, graphically slicing and dicing people, modern settings and other restrictions to the imagination.

POTC frees us from all of that. The films sweep the audience along, as if someone was reading us a bedtime story~only it's playing out on this huge screen or our TV screens. It makes us laugh, gasp, and have lots of fun. We don't have to feel guilty that we enjoyed it or aplogize in any way. It's far from our reality, and it's wonderful, harmless escapism.

People love pirates, but not all movies get it right: Cutthroat Island, Yellowbeard, Swashbuckler (which I LOVE!), Pirates, etc. Somehow, those didn't capture the imagination. I think a lot of the draw is Johnny Depp's brilliantly conceived Captain Jack Sparrow, a scalawag with a heart that might be gold.

To me, they're like the old-time movie serials, all packed together instead of playing out over several weeks. They are wonderful adventures!

EDIT: Don't assume that the audience has been on that ride. Huge numbers of people have never gone to Disneyland or Disney World. I myself never saw ANY marketing beyond a few commercials, so that had no effect on me and likely didn't affect others who don't get out a lot. After all, you have to go looking for a lot of marketing. The average person doesn't walk down the toys aisle, look at posters, or even get to the cereal aisle. So, marketing does not count for as much as people think. If marketing worked, films such as "Megaforce" and other films would be huge hits because we were bashed over the head with tie-ins; instead, they ended up with binsful of what they hoped would be hot-sellers. I couldn't even think of any examples! So, heavy marketing, especially well ahead of time, does not work too often.

Although I thought that the Pirates Of The Caribbean movies were mediocre, I guess the reason why they really became popular is because of the cast (mostly Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley, and Orlando Bloom) and the fact that there was nothing else like it in theatres.

Likewise, I never thought it would have become one of the highest grossing movie franchises of all time in the world box office (at least according to the Internet Movie Database).

actually if you go to disneyworld & disneyland they have the pirates of the carribean ride it is a very popular ride so lots of people knew the story from the ride.

the ride actually takes you on a boat ride through a pirate ship battle with cannons blazing and all. the pirate ships were huge and as a 10 year old kid i thought it was the coolest thing ever

the first movie was great fun and the best of the trilogy. the 2nd two were both about an hour too long and orlando bloom and kiera knightly had zero chemistry. while knightly and depp were dripping in it. i found myself rooting for jack sparrow to win elizabeth's heart.

edit: never said 'everyone' rode the ride. i said 'lots of people'. it being one of the more popular rides at the parks is a big factor in why it was chosen to be developed into the fun movie

Yes well, everyone said it...Johnny Depp. Most people watch a movie for the actors rather than the story, because good acting makes for good watching. And when in bonus the story looks exciting or interesting (as is the case of Pirates of the Carribean), the movie becomes a great hit!

p.s. Keira Knightley is also a wonderful actress!

I agree with everyone, Johnny Depp was really a key figure in the popularity of the whole trilogy. He was funny and he gave pirates a new more meaningful image.

I also personally agree with what ab1_13 said. I've always dreamed of a life where I can go to places beyond what anyone else has seen, free from the troubles that pester our world, and live a life of never ending adventure. The whole theme of Pirates of the Carribean really centered around that...

Johnny Depp was playing against type. The first movie was very fresh as a result.

To reinforce my point, check out The Princess Bride and the character played by Mandy Patinkin. Playing the character differently instead of the way it's always been done keeps the audience from secondguessing everything. In Depp's case, however, that direction didn't come from the script or director! Harrr..!

no one every talked about Pirates of the carribbean? what? are you serious? It was the best ride at Both Disneyland and Disneyworld. I remember being stuck in the car for 4 hours and even though the water is only 3 feet deep there are gears and moving contraptions there so no one was allowed to get out of the boat until the ride allowed you too.

It was only the best ride ever! Yo-ho Yo-ho a pirates life for me. Granted okay the movie had Depp in it, but Pirates will always do it for me. Arrr!

A lot of people went to the movie to see their favorite scene from the ride and they were in there believe me. Not to mention it had a great script and wonderfully talented Actors. That's why Disney is Disney. You freely give you money to them while they gainfully accept it.

Well the first movie was really good and I remember back then anyone I talked to was like, "Yeah that was a good movie." Like everyone liked it. Then three years later another one came out so everyone was excited to see it again. PotC pretty much brought back the popularity of pirates in general and Jack Sparrow is a really likable character. Who doesn't love him, you know what I mean?

(Though I must say I'm more of an Orlando Bloom person...)

it is popular because people like the idea of being a pirate. They like the idea of sailing on a boat and finding treasure and not having to live by the rules. They like the idea of being part of a worldwide gang of people that have rules and guidelines that only they know and don't necessarily have to follow. I know I wish I could be a pirate.
