History and the failure to catch up with changes.
Marriage is a long tradition, and is found in all cutlures. It is intergral to the human condition and probably existed amongst pre-humans.
Marriage is about family. It enforces the right for one man to mate with one woman for the purpos of ensuring that the man puts effort into raising his own children (and not that of a cuckhold).
It also enforces certain aspects of the family and familial obligations.
Modern marriage has begun to evolve into something different. More about the bond of love between man and women. People divorce simply because there is no love. Such an idea would have been unthinkable in the past.
What this means is that a gay union and a hetrosexual union in contemporary society is in fact very similar. Hence the pressure to recognise gay unions.
To summarise, gay marriage would have made no sense in societies of 50 or more years ago, but the law is changing now in many countries to match up the changing world where gay marriage makes sense.

I'm guessing your in the States?
I think it has something to do with the fact that the U.S is a predominantly Christian country. Most religions are not to keen on the gays.
Just come to Canada. There are a few european countries that recognize gay marriage too.
A note to Mr. Lizards post below.
we would only go extinct if we were all gay. I think the percentage of gay humans is around 10%. The world is pretty crowded, so I think it might help if fewer of us had children.

Because in many states and countries Marriage is defined between Man and Woman. This goes against the U.S. Constitution and in time all States will allow Gay people to Marry.

Do you mean "accept"? And it isn't so much the law but the men who make the law that refuse to accept it. Because according to the Constitution, every American has a right to the Pursuit of Happiness, and nowhere does it say it has to be with a person of opposite sex.

we could get some benefits only available to married couples and that would cost our government million and cost our employers for insurance and benefits.

Because it's nasty and unnatural. If it was normal to be gay, we would be extinct!
Sorry if this offends you, but really think about it.
