I designed this laundry and built it.. it's got all the gear in there from pop out ironing boards to LCD tv... but my wife insist on hanging the washing out on the line outside. She turns the clothes inside out so that they do not fade and hangs each piece out with three pegs, carefully spaced so minimal ironing is necessary. She says that sunlight is better thn a clothes drier and she says.. better for the environment too.

Consequently we have an outdoor clothes line and one under an operable louvre roof if it is raining.

What say you? How do you do yours?

We're big advocates of the clothesline in our house. That said we're on the edge of a tropical rainforest, so the dryer DOES get its fair share of use. Still, I did the math and figure if every household in the U.S. (with a dryer) just line-dried one load a week instead of using the dryer, the energy savings would be equivalent to 21.34 million barrels of oil a year. That doesn't even account for the greenhouse gases saved. Not bad. Not huge, either, but small steps can have a big cumulative effect.

Peace to you.

It sounds like you've got the perfect set up. Your custom built laundry room sounds great but it's nice to have the option to hang it out in the sun sometimes. I have a nice laundry room, no TV in mine, lol, but I don't have a clothes line. I had one but my elderly mother found a tick on her sheet and that was the end of that. I do miss having one. It does save money on the utility bill.

it depends on what else is going on ..... if I need something washed and dried in a hurry and the weather is a bit iffy ... I'll use the drier. but if it's a beautiful day, I'm happy to use the clothes line.. and better yet if it's summer .. I love it when the clothes you hung out first are practically dry by the time you hang the last thing up ....( ie on a 40'c day )in minutes....

On the outdoor line except for rainy days & dead of winter. The clothes smell much fresher than those dried in a drier, more hygenic.

On the clothes line in my back yard. I live in Arizona and it only takes about 10 minutes in the summer time.

Out in the hot Aegean sun of course. We DO have plenty of it, and your wife is right. Not only is it good for the environment, but the sun kills of harmful microrganisms that live in the cloth.

I clip an article of clothing to each of my dog's ears, with clothes pins ... then let him race around the yard for about 10 minutes .. wa la, fresh, dry laundry. :)
