If I want to attend med school, which major should I take during my first 4 years at Berkeley, or just at any university in general? Biology is great, but it's got too much plant stuff in it as well. What are some more specific majors?

Hi, I was a typical pre-med at Cal. I majored in molecular cell biology (MCB), which is the most common major for pre-meds at Cal.

Being a MCB pre-med is tough because it's extremely competitive. MCB is one of the biggest majors on campus. The graduation ceremony alone fills the Greek Theater and takes 5 hours to get through.

There are a few biology majors at Cal. The big two are in the College of Letters and Science: MCB and Integrative Biology. There is a biological engineering major in the College of Engineering. And then there's a whole lot of bio-sci majors in the College of Natural Resources

CNR majors include plant & microbial bio (PMB), genetics, microbiology, environmental molecular biology, environmental sci and policy mgmt (ESPM) and anything else they may have come up with since I left.

If you're going to study biology, you're going to have to study plants at some point.

However, you have the option of studying whatever else you want to study. There is no required major for medical school. You can study ANYTHING you want, provided you complete the pre-med pre-requisite coursework. These include:

1 year general chem (with lab)
1 year organic chem (with lab)
1 year general biology (with lab)
1 year intro. physics (with lab)
1 year English
1 year calculus

And many schools strongly suggest: psychology, statistics, biochemistry and humanities.

the place you went to college would not rather influence your probabilities of stepping into. that's the place you stand from the college you're graduating from and how you stick out from the the remainder of the applicants. i think of explanation why a great number of scholars from Cal are not getting into scientific college is via the fact there are such a great number of human beings with a similar dazzling grade with a similar significant and severe MCAT scores. that's like they're each and each of a similar. Admissions human beings seek for type of their applicants. The premed direction/technological know-how classes are a ought to for scientific college, yet on good of that, they decide to make certain someone with distinctive backgrounds. working in a scientific institution putting helps, yet lower back a great number of scholars try this too. Assuming which you have the needed grades and scores, the warm button is to ask your self tips on the thank you to look extra advantageous than the the remainder of your opposition. As for in case you fail, you should use Google to locate a profession that makes over six figures. truthfully, i do no longer think of having the attitude which you may fail is going to help you gain your healthcare professional dream. you're truthfully able as long as you're keen to paintings no longer ordinary for it.

You can major in anything you want to get to med school. You just need good grades and excellent MCAT scores.
However, since MCAT test questions are usually about biology and things of that nature, most people major in Biology, Biochemistry, or Chemistry before medical school.

Really, you can major in whatever you want and any university that is accredited properly.
