Here are some cult films for you to pick and choose from. I came back to add some sci fi/horror you might want to check out:
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai
Big Trouble in Little China
Rock & Rule (animated, with voice artists that include Iggy Pop!)
American Pop (animated by Ralph Bakshi~a history of music in one family line)
Rock 'n' Roll High School
Phantom of the Paradise (Brian DePalma film)
Shock Treatment (weak sequel to RHPS)
Flash Gordon (1980)
Angry Red Planet
Krull
Rawhead Rex
Teenagers from Outer Space
Space Children
Pumpkinhead (There are two sequels that seem to be building some interest.)
Tank Girl
Harold & Maude
Val Lewton-produced movies: Isle of the Dead, Bedlam, I Walked with a Zombie, Body Snatchers (graverobbers), Cat People (original), Curse of the Cat People, Seventh Victim, Leopard Man
Donnie Darko
Detour
Curse of the Faceless Man
Planet of the Vampires (Mario Bava)
Caltiki: the Immortal Monster
Dark Star
Carnival of Souls (original)
Monolith Monsters
Phase IV
Barbarella
Modesty Blaise (very campy)
Fathom (another campy one~Raquel Welch)
Fantastic Voyage
Fantastic Planet (animated)
The Monster That Challenged the World
Black Sunday (1960~with Barbara Steele)
This Island Earth
Queen of Outer Space
Eraserhead
The Warriors (original)
Blade Runner
Evil Dead movies, including the best~Army of Darkness
Brazil
Electric Dreams
The Wicker Man (original)
X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes
The Brain That Wouldn't Die
Dementia 13
The Changeling
Night of the Comet
Plan 9 from Outer Space (and other Ed Wood films)
Horror Express
Vampire Circus
The Creeping Flesh
Peeping Tom (1960)~This was released in Britain the same year "Psycho" was released here. However, "Peeping Tom" pretty much ended the director's career!
Freaks~This one cost another director his career. All of these years later, people are still shocked by it.

I'm going to name one that I have a hunch could be building a following: "Pinata: Survival Island" (2002). American Movie Classics has taken to running this past midnight Friday into Saturday. So, it's possible they're being contacted. This film is so awful that it's funny, with a creature that varies in form so much, sometimes schlocky and occasionally really cool-looking. Stars are Nicholas Brendon (Xander of "Buffy the Vampire Hunter") and Jaime Pressly (of "My Name Is Earl").

Subjects vary widely, but these are considered "in" movies to cult fans. Some actually achieve being mainstream in time, but most of these are for a selective group. After all, everyone recognizes the "RHPS" title even though s/he probably never watched it.

Were you looking for musicals or simply for offbeat fare? I'm sure you'll receive some great suggestions. This site is rather murky-looking, but they list films that have developed a following:

They're not entirely trustworthy review-wise because they credit John Carpenter with "Alien"! Oops!

Try:

* Muriel's Wedding
*Barbarella
*Headwig and the Angry Inch
*Victor/Victoria
*Hairspray
*Spinal Tap
*Everything you always wanted to know about sex, but were afraid to ask.

Would make a good starting list...
