I think Poltergeist, because The Exorcist was a little too religious for my taste. But The Exorcist has its moments, like her coming down the stairs bent over backwards and headfirst. Poltergeist still wins.

The 2 movies relied upon different forms of horror. The exorcist was a possession and the movie relied upon shock horror to thrill and scare the audience. The movie was a great one and is a classic for all time. I met Linda Blair backstage at a concert in Memphis. I was shocked when she accepted an invitation for breakfast after the show. We stayed together until she flew out the following day. Nothing like the role she played in the movie.
Poltergeist was more of a family type horror movie. It used more of a fantasy special effects sequence to thrill and scare the audience. I like this one too. Both spawned sequels, however; the original of both was better then their sequels. I go for the exorcist as the better of the two because its shock value was scarier.

Exorcist for me but that's all personal opinion. Both movies have their strongpoints and I'm a big Tobe Hooper fan. I think Exorcist usually pulls out on top due to its title as one of the scariest movies ever made.
