Wow there is so much to do and see in Melbourne and surrounds ...you will have a great time. Make sure you make time to see the Mornington Peninsula and Great Ocean Road and spend time in the CBD's laneways and little streets, full of great cafes and shops. Check out Gunamatta beach and the best Bay beach closest to the city is Aspendale but people also love Hampton beach which is only 10 mins from city. Federation Square has great free stuff like galleries and its only a short walk along the new paths to Rod Laver Arena for the tennis. There is so much more but it really depends what your interests are, I've tried to list things that appeal to all age groups.

If you are coming to the Aust. Open - then you should see tennis. LOL - a bit of aussie humour there)
It will be hot in Melbourne - but do bring an umbrella just in case as Melboune is known to change 4 seasons in one day.

ONE place you must go and see if you are in Melbourne is "The G" - The MCG or The Melbourne cricket ground. Take a tour. This is Australian sporting history at its finest.

Other than that - I will let the Chair Wizard IV answer (if I can get him to come here). He knows a lot more.
Cheers
