Hi, i have a 2001 Yamaha YZ250 that is in need of an engine rebuild. i just have one problem, the cylinder needs to be resleeved and i dont know of a good place that can do it. can someone point me in the rigt direction? i live in chicago, and im looking for a good shop around here that can do a good job for a good price. i wouldnt mind sending my cylinder out somewhere far, but would rather have it be done at a local, reputable shop.
Thanks,
Mike

Hey Guy,,
I 'bleive that thing has some kinda plated bore,,,
no traditional re-bore or re-sleeve.

Restoration process involves re-plating the bore.

I don't know of anyone in Metro Chicago area that does that.

But just up the road over by Rockford is a branch of probly the best company in the world who does that sorta work.

Even so,,it's worth the effort to call around to your local Bike Dealers and see how they go about it,,,who they use, etc.

You may find someone else, but you wont find anyone better

I realize everyone has an opinion about oil,and a favorite.
If you're open to suggestions about what will be best for your new motor,,,,that would be Belray H1R or MC1 Engine Oil.
You might wanna consider their trans oil also.

Good Luck with your project

Do a search for "LA sleeve" they are probably the biggest in the business, their website should be easy to find.

EDIT: the website is ( www.lasleeve.cc/ ) . They can sell you just the liner for about $120, or the complete rebuilt cylinder for about $265. You can change the sleeve yourself, you don't need a press, you use an oven, 400 degrees for half an hour an the old sleeve will practically fall out, drop the new one in (lined up correctly). Unfortunately, some liners still will need boring/honing/or decking, liner changing is not recommended for beginner mechanics, L A Sleeve will do the whole job for you.

I don't recommend you get it re-sleeved at a machine shop.
It's a little tricky to get the cylinder ports lined up.
If the machinist has never done a 2 stroke before, I wouldn't trust him.
Also the ports have to be machined to fit.
If over done - the port timing will change and mess up the engines performance.
If under done - a piston ring can snag a port and wreck the cylinder.
Machine shops are proficient in re-sleeving 4 stroke cylinders.
Look in the phone book under motorcycles - then search for speed shops, performance, motorcycle machine shop.

you can do it yourself with a 10 ton shop press, if you don't have a shop press take it to a starter rebuilder shop, they have a shop press
