My biggest dream is to become a pastry chef, not a glamorous one, just a happy semi-successful pastry chef. I love to make desserts, its like art and it makes me and others SO happy. I make cakes from home for fun. But the problem is my parents have always viewed me as the "smart kid" the one with a "good future." When i told them i was leaning away from psychology and toward baking, they nearly passed out. But what confuses me is they've always taught me to do what makes me happy, not rich. I live in the central valley CA so theres not much opportunity for a pastry chef. But i want it so bad, i want to get started while im young and can always change my mind. How do i convince my parents how serious i am? And where do i get my foot in the door to begin with??? Tech schools costs 10s of 1000s of dollars, i cant do that.

Listen to your parents they stand a good chance of being right and at least you know they are on your side. After listening and considering for a long time and you are still wanting to do it your way then do it but don't disregard their advise out of hand.
Maybe take a part time job in a bakery while finishing your degree. That will help you learn baking more and you will have degree in something. Maybe get a degree in business then you can start your own bakery, hire some pastry chefs and learn from them.

I would say that you should go to business school instead to start and work your way through college in a kitchen at a hotel doing what you enjoy assisting a pastry chef. Then when you are done with business school take course towards becomming a pastry chef. By doing this you will have the business background to help you make become sucessful in developing a pastry business.

Good luck!!!

Do both! Just start with the pastry chef thing first. Then work on apprenticing and getting your training. After that focus on running your own business. After that take psychology and business courses as they relate to your company and go be a great big success. But first start with the pastry chef thing because I have a sweet tooth!

well you should explain to your parents, thats what your

dream is, thats what you want. something you love should be

your life. i know you luv ur parents and u know they just want

to help, i know that too, but really if you want to become a

chef, go for it! just bcuz u want to become a chef doesnt

mean ur not smart and wont have a good future. chefs these

days earn GOOD money. and it takes a lot more money for

tech school. itz ur decision, what you want is upto you, not

me, but im trying to help. and if u become a chef, you can

become successful in being one. pastry chefs earn well. and

the chefs today only become what they loved. i hope ur

parents understand you, well bcuz...their ur parents. i hope

you become a pastry chef, and share your recipes with the

world so some of us can learn LOL...

Hey Kid!! You must state to your parents that they have always stood by you in whatever you want to do to make you happy, so why are they letting you down now? Show your parents my answer.
Our youngest daughter was our wizz kid, we had so many hopes and dreams for her, as initially she wanted become a doctor, until she discovered dog grooming and decided to quit medical school to become an dog groomer. We were gutted, and tried everything to disuade her, but her mind was made up, and we decided to support her. She is now a qualified dog groomer, and has been for 10 years, she doesn't earn a fortune, but she's doing something she enjoys, and that's good enough for us!!!

Listen to your heart- its the best thing anyone can do. This is YOUR life- don't focus on only your parents happiness- focus on yours, afterall it is most important! If you don't enjoy your job- then your life is going to be miserable. This tiny decision is going to have an impact on the rest of your life- listen to your heart ;) you won't regret it girl.
