MySpace and Yahoo! Answers both have policies against children under 13 using their forums.

No, I don't think they should be allowed. For 2 reasons.

1.) You must be 14 to get a myspace account without faking your birth date.
2.) There are so many creeps out on myspace. Like pedophiles.

If you do allow her to have a myspace, my suggestion would be monitor her friends. Only allow her to have friends from school, family members, and maybe some teachers as friends.

I have a myspace though and I'm 13 year old girl. I got it without my mothers' permission. I only use it for people I already know. When I talk to people, its mostly to tell them to call me. I do not favor myspace that much. I find it pointless although it is fun to decorate your profile and you keep speak your mind and allowing those friends and family who normally cut you off and don't listen, to understand you better because of the blog feature. I hope I helped.

Although there are several answers to this, I feel strongly on the subject.

I do not believe a 12/13 year old girl should be allowed to use MySpace. MySpace requires its users to be 14 years of age at a MINIMUM before they are allowed to even create an account; it does this for a reason. I'm sure you are well aware that the internet can be a very dangerous place, especially for children. Sexual-predators use social sites, such as myspace, to find and track down adolescents. While most parents think that "Oh, it won't happen to my son/daughter", the fact of the matter is, it does. Children need to be well-educated on the dangers of the internet and what to do in certain situations. Even after that, parents should still keep a close eye on them.

Definitely not before she is 14.

After that, only on the understanding that you can (and will) check randomly on the content of her page and who her friends are, and that if it's inappropriate you will take the privilege away there and then, no warnings.

And make sure you do the checking!

Plus all the stuff other people have mentioned about being friends-only and so on - but don't rely on that. Friends have friends have friends, and it doesn't take long before some of them are 18+ men.

Edited because I thought the myspace site requirements were 13. They're 14. No, she should not have one - and teaching anyone that age requirements on the internet can be blithely ignored is downright dangerous. Gambling sites? You have to be 18 or is it 21, but sure, make up a birthdate, that's what mum let me do on myspace so it must be okay! Adult sites...yeah, click "I agree to the terms and conditions", nobody needs to read those...credit card...sure, I'll just use mum's...

I recently heard that my nephew who is the same age has a myspace page; however his mother monitors all of the emails that he gets. Not sure how but I did hear that there were some things you could do in the vein of monitoring the emails and only allowing people as friends who know your last name, etc. Not certain of all of the specifics as I have never been on myspace; however its worth looking into if the girl really wants a page.

honestly, you need to have the talk with your daughter about the whole "everybody else is doing it, so why can't i?"
it CAN be harmless to use myspace at 13, and yes, almost everyone i know has a myspace, including all kinds of 13 year olds. there is a setting on it that makes it private to ONLY people she adds as friends, which makes it safe enough so that if you make sure she only adds her ACTUAL friends, then she'll be fine. make sure she doesn't try to use it as a tool to look older, posting pictures of herself in "suggestive" poses or kissing the camera. But honestly, myspace is becoming really passe' and it is really lame for older people to use now. Most of the people using it are teenagers, child molesters and marketing groups such as bands and self-branded people. just make sure she's safe, and be responsible. i know that she'll want you to mind your own buisiness, but then that should be a condition of use. she's too young to be hiding things from you...

I would have to say "maybe". It depends on how mature they are and if you can talk to them about predators online. Also, the age restrictions on myspace is 14 yrs old. She's close so it might be alright. Just make it so her account is private and spam is on high. Make sure you know her password so you can check out what she's doing. Myspace is fun and different but also a home for pc viruses and crazy people.

Absolutely not. there is no need for a 12 year old to be on myspace. Dont you watch tv and see how many children end missing because of the internet every day. She should use that time to enhance her vocabulary or work on some extra math problems

What is the age that you can use myspae? I think it's 13 (when entering your birthdate to create an account.) If Myspace thinks that's a good age, so do I! Making it private would also be a good idea.
