How did exploration affect the New World?

exploration allowed the Europeans to murder and infect the local Indians, reclaim the land as their own, grow and expand, mutilating the land and animals around them.

Actually, answer #2 is pretty accurate. He left out enslave and loot the native population (particularly in colonies "south of the border"), imposition of European culture, eradication of several species, etc. etc.

Of course, there is also the affect of The United States, modern democracy, Mormonism, and more than just a few other *positive* things that may never have happened without the discovery and subsequent colonization of the "new world". What might have happened if WW I or WW II were fought without the U.S. and Canada, for example?

Good reference: "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee". This book should be mandatory for every American to read.
