The guy at the repair shop said it's a size that hasn't been sold for some time. It's an old door. I fitted the lock back in the door and forgot about it.

However a few weeks later, this evening acutally, the lock totally fell apart and is fully unusable.

My back door is currently without lock and handle, closed only with a chair resting against it. I keep thinking someone with the rage virus will get in the house as we sleep.

I can't put any old size of new lock back in the door cause it's metal door with a cavity for just that exact size of mortice lock.

Thanks.

Remove the lock and measure the openings. You will have to search hard, not many people sell mortise locks anymore. You might be better off installing just a handle and drilling a new hole for a deadbolt lock

Is the hole in the door too small? If you screw a small piece of ply wood to your door it will hold your hole saw on the center. Is the hole for the handle too far from the edge? You can still buy a 5 inch throw [meaning the center of the hole is 5 inches from the edge of the door] at home depot. It is sold separate from the knob. hope this helps
