She made it up to get attention and to push her own political agenda.
The gay community should be ticked off to the nth degree.
After she made her billion dollars, she said to them, in effect, "Oh, by the way. Dumbledore's gay. But I couldn't put that throughout the books because I know they wouldn't have sold as well. But now that I'm rich and set for life, I'll throw y'all some crumbs by saying that Dumbledore has always been gay. I just forgot to mention it."

Neither. If this came out a year or so after the last H.P. movie was released on DVD, maybe I could buy the attention explanation. If she never writes another word, she will be firmly in the public eye at least until then.
Did she just make it up? I seriously doubt it. Read the transcript of the Q&A where she revealed it. The truth of the matter is that she has been giving out tons of information at these question and answer sessions. No one blinked when she revealed what the survivors did between the last chapter and the epilogue. No one cared when she revealed who actually killed who. This is just one more fact that she shared with her audience. The bottom line is that she created the character, and the world in which he lived. If she said he was always gay, then guess what, he was always gay. There isn't a single word in the text that confirms or denies her statement, so, we really just have to take her word for it.
Frankly, does it really matter? Does it make him less of a person? Does it make him a poorer teacher? No, it gives us a bit of better look at his character. Why wasn't there anything in the text? Because the book wasn't about him, it was about Harry. There are a whole lot of other secondary characters in those books that we know less about. Are they all gay? Maybe... If so, you know what? It is still a great story.

No i dont think so, jk rowling doesnt seem to be a person that likes a lot of attention cause she hasnt done many interviews or anything. I think she wants the characters to seem as realistic as possible and also even though the books are finished fans are probably going to want to hear more things about the 'magical' world and everything. So in a way these things will probably keep the fans happy and also give a more down to earth and reality sense to the books.. also you hasve to remember there are still the movies to come yet

I don't think so. I think that she knew all along but didn't say anything about it until after the series was completed because she knew that she would lose many fans and readers. Plus Dumbledore being gay is really irrelevant to the storyline just as Harry's parent's occupations are therefore she didn't feel the need to state it anywhere in the series.

I don't think that JKR has an agenda, or is seeking more publicity. I think it speaks to the popularity of the series and the amount of emotional energy that fans have put into the books, that it became a big story.
According to the story I read, she had told the writer of the screenplay for HBP that Dumbledore was gay because there was mention of a female love interest in the screenplay and she had to set them right. Having done that, she might as well have made it public, since it would have eventually come out anyway--she could control when and how it was done. and in any case, this story came out because she was directly asked if Dumbledore loved anyone.
Throughout the series, we know Dumbledore as a tireless and seemingly single-minded fighter against Dark Wizards (at least from Harry's perspective; we do have to remember that Albus is also a great teacher, an alchemist, and important theoretical Wizard--remember the tools and instruments he made himself). But how did Albus become that way?
We learn much about this in DH, with Arianna's story, Aberforth's story and the story of the friendship between Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald. In reading DH, it was clear that Grindelwald seduced Dumbledore on a number of levels; intellectually, ideologically, and, by JKR's new revelation, emotionally. We don't know if that seduction was sexual as well, and I'm not sure it is important for us to know.
The revelation completes the picture for us of a man who felt betrayed, injured by one he loved, ashamed at how far he went from rational thought and behavior, how far he really was from what he thought he was.
The up shot is that we now know more completely Dumbledore's motivations for fighting Dark Wizards--his shame at his own tangential contribution to Grindelwald's career, his reluctance to fight him, and, when Voldemort rose, his determination to not to repeat his prior mistake of inaction and to fight Voldemort from the start.
So in summery, It was part of the way JKR viewed Dumbledore and understood him. I don't think it was something that would have come out voluntarily--more likely something that would have made a scholarly article 50 or 60 years from now after she was gone and literary scholar had access to her full notes (assuming she left them to be investigated).
BTW, there is some inkling of this in DH, where Rita Skeeter talks about devoting a chapter in her book about Dumbledore to the Dumbledore/Harry relationship. This is not to say that there was anything improper--but that JKR did put out a hint.

That's my belief and I have to agree with Marissa, in my opinion. J.k. can't just say that Dumbledore is gay she would have to write it in the book. But since she said it after the book was published, it is, to me, just one more theory in the sea of weird beliefs that pertain to Hp

I just don't understand if it were true( and this IS fiction) why she didn't say anything earlier.
I think this is just a way to get more publicity and it doesn't help the gay movement any as she was so secretive...not that they really need help LOL
I just wish she had said something BEFORE the last book has been read and the whole thing was over.
She said 7 was the last book is she going to write a prequel now?????

probably not.
she's probably developed all of her characters and knows how she wanted to portray them. I bet she was afraid that telling everyone Dumbledore is gay could hurt book sales, but know since the series is over it doesn't matter anymore. Yes she probably enjoys the attention

I think so because none of the books make reference to it and it was just suddenly announced after she was finished writing. I think she was just trying to get support. There is nothing wrong with him being gay, but it would have been a more powerful revelation if she had given signs in the books.
