At my old job I worked on drawings using only photoshop! it was hard work and I know a vector drawing program would have made my life easier...but work wouldnt buy one. (I just fell into photoshopping cartoons for fun-but had been hired for data entry).

In any case, i want to seriously start learning how to draw crisp vector illustrations but don't know which program is best...and which program is used more in the industry.

I'll start saving up money when i get an answer! thank you!

Illustrator is now the industry standard editor for vector design and illustration and its integration with Photoshop, InDesign and now also with Flash is another good reason to prefer it to CorelDraw.
So my advice is to get skilled in Illustrator using also the large amount of tutorials and aids that you will find online.

Good luck!

Clearly, Illustrator is the industry standard for this type of work. Still, as a beginner, you may still consider the much less expensive Corel suite. The vector drawing tools work in a VERY similar fashion. When and if you eventually purchase Adobe Illustrator, you may find the transition fairly easy.

You might check out the Photoshop version you have. It may also have a vector drawing tool. (paths tool) It allows you to draw a vector path that you can "stroke" with pen, pencil or brush lines. You can also use this path to make scalable masks and many other handy uses.

I would recommend Adobe Illustrator. Then get the Classroom in a book, book and take the lessons from it. It is a basic book, which should be your start and not end of the program.

Since you have knowledge of photoshop you should feel fairly comfortable with it.

I've been hearing a lot about GIMP and Adobe Illustrator from graphic makers of fansites so I guess those would be good choices.

geek546 (get it?) is on the money. I would vote it as best answer.
