I noticed that Boston Red Sox player Manny Remerez's plastic baseball cap is caked with dirt or scum- what is that, dirt, poo or tobbacco?

Could thi lack of discipline be one reason why the Sox are losing?

See the story goes, he was out to toilet paper and his helmet was the only thing around, so he used that. Since his personal hygiene is less than impeccable, he decided this actually made him smell better, so he left it on there. That is Red Sox logic for you...let's wear our pooh!

It's dirty and scraped up because he doesn't change it. I remember when the Red Sox were playing the Yankees in the 2004 playoffs (Yanks won 3 in a row, followed by 4 in a row by the Sox), the point was made that the Yankee players were required to wear pristine helmets wereas the Red Sox were permitted to keep their dirty scratched up helmets for as long as they were functionable.

It's pine tar, which is a sticky substance that is used commonly by batters to keep a firm grip on the bat. It kinda looks like is burnt but is not.

probably a combo of pine tar & dirt. pine tar is put on the bats & batting gloves to give a better grip, its sticky so if it gets on the helmet & then manny touches it or dirt gets on it, it will stick.
