First: Thank you, veterans and reservists.

For those who don't remember the days when news was published on big sheets of paper, folded and rolled up and delivered to peoples' homes, here's a hint: some of the news from 1971 included President Nixon's attempt to extend the draft. A maverick senator from Alaska threatened to filibuster, resulting in months of debate and amendments and ultimately producing a bill that would end the draft in two years, in 1973.
The same Senator used his position as Chairman of the Grounds and Monuments Subcommittee to read into the Congressional Record the secret history of political lies and maneuvering that mislead the U.S. population into allowing our politicians to extend our involvement in Viet Nam.
The same senator proposed legislation that would have normalized diplomatic ties with China; this before Kissinger's secret visit and Nixon's historic visit accomplished that goal.

Ever since Vietnam, no President, or Presidential candidate has dared speak of using the draft.

So I guess we thank the outrage at a wasted war we had little business being involved in. Kind of like now.

None, too late for me. I am a Viet Nam Vet.

The draft was ended by President Richard M. Nixon. It is still on the books, but need congressional approval to be activated again.

None, the military is still getting volunteers, although the number has been reduced. The current staffing levels of the US military do not require that a draft be utilized.

George Bush. The Dems have tried everything to get the draft started up again during his Presidency.

Ron Paul first entered Congress in 1976, and the draft ended about 1977 or 1978, so I would say of the present presidential candidates, Ron Paul helped to pass legislation to end the draft.

I don't think any of the other candidates were a part of the federal government at that time.

None, as there has not been a draft for over thirty years.

Besides, I can not be drafted: I am already a reservist.
