Many rock ballads, as we know, can be cheesy... but name one that is acceptably "cool" in your opinion, and state the reason why...
(This question was inspired by one that R&P member Spooky posted out a few days ago ... on the cheesiest rock ballads)
For instance:
I like Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" because it's the song in that famous scene in "Say Anything" where John Cusack serenades a girl with a boom box over his head...
...therefore it has a coolness factor to it and isn't cheesy

Prof. I guess you're right, it's hard to define a ballad, because as lovnrckets said, it's sort of a contradiction, the word rock and ballad shouldn't even be paired. Is it possible for a ballad to even be "rawking"? (sorry - the word 'rocking' sounds square to me when spelled that way)

This will be extremely difficult because by the very definition of rock, as well as ballad, these two things are polar opposites and don't work well together. Perhaps these are somewhat acceptable.
Stone Sour - Through Glass - gotta love it when a scary bad *** metal band goes all soft and tender.
Duran Duran - Ordinary World
Smashing Pumpkins - Tonight, Tonight

The Rain Song ~ Led Zeppelin
Something ~ The Beatles
Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood ~ Joe Cocker
Still In Love With You ~ Thin Lizzy
Wish You Were Here ~ Pink Floyd
Against All Odds ~ Phil Collins
Beauty and the Beast ~ Stevie Nicks
Heaven Can Wait ~ Meat Loaf
Need Your Love So Bad ~ Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac
Reasons why.... just because!
Most of these are noted as being classic tracks, and they wouldn't have been afforded that status if they were cheesy.

Angel ; Little Wing ; The Wind Cries Mary ~ Jimi Hendrix
Behind Blue Eyes ~ The Who
Wild Horses ; Angie ~ Rolling Stones

Well, my personel favorite is Porcupine Tree's The Rest Will Flow, it's very sweet, but I never found it too be cheesy. I think I find it not to be cheesy because it's really minimalistic. It's not full of extravagent solos so crazy vocals, it's simple.
Since youtube doesn't have a video for it, I'll instead put Porcupine Tree's Lazarus
http://youtube.com/watch?v=dfmOtTMa-8M
I'm personally hearing November Rain right now on the radio, and I think as long as the ballad doesn't use cliche's, it's fine. Using a cliche in a ballad is suicide for a song.

It's more fringe-y, but totally has the mentality.
Sebadoh - Together or Alone (Barlow built a career on walking the line)
...and I'm not sure if it counts, but
Grandaddy - the Warming Sun
******************
Glad I'm not the only person that was having trouble finding the line. Here are a couple more I was thinking of. I deleted several answers because I wasn't sure if they were true ballads.
the Pixies - Velouria
...also on the Jeremy Enigk kick (thanks for the idea Buzzkill) Abegaile Anne (as well as your choice of Shade and the Black Hat which is a great tune as well)
Okkervil River - For the Enemy
Aimee Mann - Lost In Space (Hopefully I won't lose any cred over that one)
Built To Spill - The Host
******************
Probably too mellow to be a "rock" ballad, but while we're on Peter Gabriel, I was always a big fan of Mercy Street as well.

I, Norton I, Emperor of Yahoo! Answers, formerly of Algoa Bay, Cape of Good Hope, and now for the last 150 years and 10 months past of S. F., Cal., have issued an imperial decree whereas "Sad Song" by Lou Reed is to be considered an acceptable rock ballad.
Given under our royal hand and seal at San Francisco, this 28th day of October, 2007.

It's just a great song, Freddy & Brian always preformed it in concert, and the whole audiance would sing along.
Dream On - Aerosmith
It's the all time classic ballad. Not too wimpy either.

My main problem is I never really know what constitutes a ballad but here goes :
Alice in Chains - Nutshell, No Excuses, and Don't Follow (Jar of Flies is just that good)
Jimi Hendrix - The Wind Cries Mary & Castles Made Of Sand
The Who - Love Reign O'er Me
I know there's not a lot of people who like U2 but I absolutely love Running To Stand Still and Bad.
And I totally agree with "In Your Eyes", fantastic song. Throw in "Red Rain" along with it.
Wow Buzzkill, you caused me to go scrambling for Return of the Frog King. Haven't heard that in forever..........
I forgot about "Don't Give Up", that's a good one too...
