what type of gel or just use a hairspray?

ok so i used to spike my hair with number 10 gel . (my hair is about 1.5 inches tall.. i used number 8 gel and i still have the same "hard " look. I am trying to change my look to have my hair combed to the top (not spike but still to the top) without making it look like i used hair gel because my hair looks good without a gel. I saw some guys with that look but i really never experimented.. what is the best product for this??

bacon fat seems to work just fine and has a wonderful fragrance as well.
