The item costs 97 dollars and you don't have any money. So you lend from your friends A and B 50 dollars each to buy it. You handed the shopkeeper 100 dollars and he gave you gave you 3 dollars as change. You then give a dollar each to your friends and keep the remaining buck to yourself. Your remaining debt to your friends is 49 dollars each.

Question:
If your total debt is 98 dollars plus the one dollar you kept to yourself, and you originally owe 100 dollars, WHERE DID THE ONE DOLLAR GO?

your total debt is not 98 + 1... you paid off $1 to each of your friends, and you have $1 in your pocket THAT YOU ARE GOING TO GIVE TO YOUR FRIENDS....this means that practically you owe your friends $97, plus you having paid them each $1 and having $1 in your pocket:
$97 that you owe + $1 for one friend + $1 for other friend + $1 in your pocket = $100

Technically you gave them each $48.50 to start. You paid. Got your change. Then handed them ecah another dollar. They now each owe you $49.50. That equals $99. You kept the other buck. Really no money disappeared, but when worded the way you did... I'd say Criss Angel the mind freak had something to do with it.

How can you "lend" if you have no money?
Oh! You meant "borrowed" ?
Your total debt was NOT $98 plus the one in your pocket. It Was $100, of which you have $1 left in your pocket. No logic necessary, just good syntax.

didnt "go" anywhere. If you were lent $100, you pay back $100 ($50 to each friend).
