The new Xboxes on sale now have a new heatsink configuration which should reduce the risk of getting the RRoD.. Also, the Xbox 360 is currently undergoing a hardware revision.. A new chipset codenamed Falcon is being released.. The new chips run cooler and will help reduce hardware failures on Xbox 360s.. (link below for Falcon info)
Another thing to consider.. you probably have a large collection of PS2 games.. if you expect to play them on your PS3 you need to buy the discontinued PS3 60GB now before they are gone.. the 80GB PS3 which replaced the 60GB only has partial backwards compatibility and the new 40GB PS3 coming out in November will have NO PS2 compatibility..
If you are not concerned with PS2 backwards compatibility You should get the Xbox 360 now.. it has the most games and the best online service.. Sony's main selling point right now is based on the PS3's potential.. Once some of that potential becomes reality and the price comes down to meet the capabilities of the console you should pick one up too.. if you still want one..

I've had this argument so many times..Just research both systems and see which one you think is better. The PS3 has better hardware, hands down. The bluray player alone proves that point. The PS3 is also more reliable, since it is 0.2% fault and the Xbox 360 is 33% faulty (it has a 3 year warranty now, thoug). The Xbox 360 has more games, but the PS3 came out after the 360, so thats to be expected. Look at the future lineup of games (specifically exclusives). If you must have Halo 3 or Metal gear Solid, get that system.
The PS3 has free online, Xbox costs $50. The Xbox elite has the 120 GB hard drive and the biggest PS3 has an 80 GB (but it's easily upgradeable if you wish to do so). The PS3 is backwards compatible (except the 40gb), the xbox 360 only plays a fraction of xbox games.
It's your decision, so do some research before making your choice.

I've also had this argument lots of times!
The actual different hardware makes little difference in the performance in games (these are not PCs that are used for breaking codes), if you research the Xbox 360 games actually look better than the PS3. PS3 argument is that the Xbox 360 has been out for a year longer and people have had more time developing on it, but when you use "Gears Of War" which came out on Xbox 360 over a year ago as a benchmark against today's PS3 games - you'll notice that argument doesn't hold much water. And let's not talk about the inferior Madden '08 for the PS3. It's been over a year since release and twice that for development, is the PS3 outshining yet? Not quite. The graphical differences between the two consoles really are negliable. This argument is pretty mute.
The failure rate if the Xbox 360 is not good, Microsoft has had to offer a free worldwide 3-year warranty on all their Xbox 360 consoles to compensate in case any of them fails. The new machines from about September 2007 onwards (see date on box) have a redesigned motherboard and heatsinks together with cooler running chips to help eliminate that.
Bluray is nice, but let's face it. You buy the Xbox 360 for games only. If you want HD movies you buy the HD add-on (and every one who has will buy HD movies specifically). Those who buy PS3 either want games only (free Bluray movies with the console does not make you a habitual movie buyer) or you buy it as a Bluray player and maybe a couple of games that came as a bundle to show off to the friends who may be interested (but you're not a real gamer). Let's not forget why you are buying a games console!
Many PS3 exclusives have become available on the Xbox 360, simply because the market share on PS3 is not enough to recover a lot of the development costs. Let's see how many of those exclusives remain so.
The PS3 is big enough and already 5kg, do you really want another add-on for extra disk capacity? Saying that 80gb should be fine anyway for now so I wouldn't worry about it.
Backwards capacity for PS2 is only applicable on the older original machines (in the U.S, Japan and Hong Kong - the rest of the world was supplied with a crippled PS3 without the Emotion engine and had to have software emulation for each game). The new 40gb has no PS2 graphics chip or Emotion engine so there is no compatibility. The new 80gb has no Emotion engine and has to be emulated in software so it will only support a fraction of the games - in fact, fewer than the Xbox 360 currently supports of Xbox games (about 400 which is hardly a few).
I've played free online games before, but Xbox Live really is much better and reliable (even though you pay an annual subscription) and there are lots more available players online because the experience and interface is consistent and lets you get started easily and immediately. However, let's see about what FREE actually means for the PS3. The PS3 relies on games developers to supply the hardware server cost and maintenance (so it's free, unlike Nintendo who actually swallow up the cost), people like EA Sports let you play Online Game '07 for free, but when a new version comes out like Online Game '09 they require you to 'upgrade' to contine playing online for free - wait, that's not exactly free is it?
The Xbox 360 does not come with wireless interface, you need to buy that as an attachment onto the back of the console, the PS3 has it built-in which is nice if you require wireless router connectivity.
I will do the same as the guy above and say...
It's your decision, so do some research before making your choice.
If you want a radical view from a games developer as to why the PS3 sucks and is worse FOR GAMES than the Xbox 360, read the last link...

hmm lets take this easy.
Xbox 360 Elite(I just recently bought mine{yesterday])-
-Better games
-For 20$ more do u really want less gb. 120 or 80(PS3 max)
-Online Is Incredible
-The Elite has a tremendous less chance of flaws from other 360's
Ps3.- Less Gb
- Less games. (good ones)
-Online is bad
- Weighs more
I've had a 360 for 2 years and have just had a recent problem is my Xbox 360 Permium, other then that i love my 360.
If anything go to Best Buy or Circuit City and buy the Coverage plan for 60-100 $ depending on which you go to. In the chance you are scared of 360 failure. I did and got my money back for my first 360.
So as a conclusion i would like to say that....THE 360 Owns =D

properly its a private determination of what gadget you elect. human beings have there opinion on the two structures. I artwork at best purchase interior the media branch and that i will enable you be attentive to this. The 80 Gb PS3 is going to be discontinued and that they are in straightforward terms going with the forty Gb. With the PS3 you get the blu ray participant and the Xbox 360 has a HD participant bought one after the different. The Xbox 360 Elite is one hundred twenty Gb and is way less services to the pink jewelry of dying. maximum new Xbox 360 have the hot falcon sixty 5 chip set in them what makes the gadget run quieter and cooler. Your decision relies upon in this too are you finding to bypass on line and play video games? if so then you definately could bypass with the Xbox 360. Why? properly the PS3 has on line too yet its no the place close to as stable as Xbox 360. Xbox 360 marketplace place is extra useful then the PS3 homestead. you have extra downloadable content fabric on the 360 good now then the PS3. definite the PS3 on line is unfastened and you're able to pay to get on line with the 360 yet you get what you payed for. no longer something worse then having some baby on your group kill you and destroy the internet activity play. PS3 has a stable line up this twelve months with extra exclusives like steel kit bought, Grand Trismal and extremely final myth. The Xbox has extra exclusives good now like Halo 3 (best on line activity), Bioshock ( what won activity of the twelve months), Mass result and extra. yet alot of your stable video games like Grand robbery vehicle, Rainbow Six Vegas 2, call Of accountability 4 and Assassins Creed all are on the two structures. So the determination could be as much as you to no longer what others enable you be attentive to.

Well, I had saved up more than enough for either, but I bought the new arcade xbox 360 earlier today. The new xbox 360's have only a 5% chance of breaking and they're cheaper. so I would choose the elite if i were you.

This is my cut and paste answer. The reason for that is because a tech info is a tech info, you can't beat it.
PS3 will win the console war, no doubt. Xbox 360 and Wii are so weak from technological point of view, that in couple of years they won't be capable of dealing with serious graphics. GTA IV, for instance, isn't even announced for Wii - this toy won't be able to cope with the game's requirements. Xbox 360 is getting GTA IV, however, the game is going to be released on several DVDs - Xbox 360 owners will have to interrupt gaming process and switch discs (Rockstar complained about this issue). Only PS3 will have it on single BD-DVD.
Let's compare PS3 and XBOX 360:
A third of XBOX 360 (33%) are malfunctioning right from the start. PS3 return rate is only around 0.2%.
PS3 has 8 (7+1) kernels in Cell processor, Xbox 360 -only 3.
PS3 uses advanced tech called Blu-Ray, one disc can store up to 54 gb (in the future - up to 200 gb), Xbox 360 - regular dual layer DVD-9 (8.5GB). It's possible to get HD-DVD (max. - 30GB) for 360, but it'll cost you around 180$, in this case Xbox is going to be MUCH more expensive, than PS3.
Calculations per sec - PS3 - 51-billion-dot-product-operati... per second
Xbox 360 - 33.6-billion-dot-product-opera... per second
PS3 has full media support - USBs, built-in 4 slots card reader (except 20GB and 40GB versions), ability to use printer and so on.
Xbox 360 has USBs and only 2 memory slots.
PS3 supports up to 7 Bluetooth Controllers
Xbox 360 - up to 4 Controllers
PS3 - wi-fi included (except 20 gb version)
Xbox 360 - wi-fi will cost you around 100 $
Graphics are stronger in PS3, due to RSX chip, that was developed by Nvidia exclusively for PS3. To estimate its power (roughly) - take 6800 Ultra nvidia graphics card, multiply it by 2 - get a result, still PS3 stronger, because 6800 Ultra runs on 400 Mhz and RSX runs on 550 Mhz. However, it's difficult to compare, because 360 has a video chip with totally different structure and operating memory is divided differently in both consoles.
PS3 uses technology from AGEIA company. It does to physics of the game same thing GPU (videocard processor) does to graphics. This thing is on sale for PC(special card). The price is around 350$. There is no such thing in 360.
Xbox 360 is widely known for so-called "red ring of death" problem - it gets overheated easily. My PS3 was running for more than 12 hours non-stop with no problems. Sometimes Xbox 360 becomes so overheated, that thermopaste on CPU melts, drips on motherboard and successfully shortcircuits it. That's why in some countries people call Xbox 360 "Coffin 360".
Besides all of this, I've seen disassembled Xbox 360 - regular PC architecture - Billy Gates is an uninventive nerd (as usual).
When I saw disassembled PS3 - it was a surprise - smart architecture, good cooling (don't buy external PS3 coolers - they make everything worse - original system is good), etc.
In 2008 PS3 will get more than 300 games, including Metal Gear Solid 4, The Agent and other great exclusives. Here is the good link to the future PS3 releases. http://ps3.ign.com/index/release.html......
PS3 online is free, Xbox 360 - you have to pay.
There were reports, that 360 scratches discs. No reports on that in PS3.
The funniest thing, that right now there are no games for PS3, that show full potential of the console. Biggest games weigh only 25 GB (Xbox 360 will need more than 3 discs even for those).
On PS3 you can install other OS, such as Linux Yellow Dog, Ubuntu and others. Sony officially lets you do it. There is no such thing in 360.
PS3 HDD can be replaced easily with any 2.5" SATA 5400 RPM HDD (used in laptops). 250 GB will cost you around 170$. In 360 you have to buy exclusive HDD, where 20GB will cost you 100$.
Sony expects PS3 to stay on the market for, at least, 7-10 years. Also Sony reduces price now. Soon there is going to be cheaper 40GB version of PS3.
Sony constantly upgrades PS3 software (free updates for OS) - you get new functions and improvements.
PS3 controller (sixaxis) has a motion control - you move controller - game responds. Wii has it, Xbox 360 - doesn't. PS3 controller is getting vibrocontroller soon (Dualshock 3).
On PS3 you can help sick people by running Folding Home project. Wii and Xbox 360 didn't even think about it.
New 40GB is coming with a lower prive between around 400$ and 400 euros (depends on the region).
I didn't mention Wii, because it's so weak, no point to talk about it. Leave it for kindergarten and casual games.
