An example of how religion was used ot create political power would be Henry VIII. By severing ties with the RCC, he was able to (1) make religion a nationalistic unificaiton tool, (2) keep foreign influence out of England, and perhaps mopst important polically (3) retain the RCC lands and income previous beign sent to Rome within England and to the crown.

It created problems later for Elizabeth, who found herself at odds with Spanish and French catholic kings.

Another point is that a king ordained by the pope or bishops had the church's backing; opposition to the king coudl result in "eternal" consequences.
