Just a question for my own knowledge. I life on the bottom floor of an apartment. I'm actually buried half way in the ground roughly. Every once in a while, my toilet starts bubbling for no apparent reason. I'll go check it out and eventually, it will flush itself; like the water leaves the bowl. If I flush it after that, sometimes it'll get close to overflowing, and may or may not flush. Eventually it will return to normal operation. Anyhow just curious as to what causese this to happen.

They had an episode on X-Files on that, be careful when you sit, you don't know what might crawl out of the toilet!

This sounds like a venting issue, not a blockage... if your toilet is draining itself without you flushing it, then it sounds like the trap could be getting sucked out by passing water from other tenants. if this particular suite was not vented properly, or if the vent is blocked, the rushing water would attempt to vent itself through your toilet, sink, and tub drains. this could also be the cause of your overflowing as well. if the vent is blocked, your toilet will act like a 2L pop bottle turned upside down. it will chug. (if you poke a hole in the top of the bottle, it will drain quickly) calling your building super will help (maybe) but he will probably have to call a plumber to troubleshoot it. there's too many variable to try to figure it out from here.

The bubbling sound you hear is the sewer line backing up. The line to the drain needs help (or the drain field itself). It's so slow going down that when over use occurs, it backs up. It goes away temporarily because it's going through a period of slow use...Sooner or later you're going to have a problem with this. Tell landlord right away.

sounds like its time for the building manager to get the sewer system cleaned out before someones poop ends up coming up from your toilet
