Are you joking?

Even seen a Jodie Foster movie? or an Ashley Judd movie? or a Charlize Theron movie? Charlie's Angels? Underworld? Elektra? Catwoman? Eon Flux? Elizabeth?

...& MOST of the other action movies that hit the theater where the inject the story with the "tough chick" that weighs about 90 pounds, but bests men three times her size?

The cinema actively targets the female demographic. It's part of their formulaic approach to moviemaking nowadays. The script isn't finalized until EVERY demographic has been targeted.

I like quite a few movies that I'd consider feminist, since the women are very strong protaganists in the movie, here's some of my fav's:

Kill Bill (Uma Thurman)
Thelma & Louise (Susan Sarandon & Geena Davis)
Fried Green Tomatoes (Jessica Tandy, Kathy Bates, Mary Stuart Masterson, Mary-Louise Parker)
A League of Their Own (Geena Davis, Madonna, Rosie)
The Accused (Jodie Foster & Kelli McGillis, very violent)
Silkwood (Meryl Streep & Cher)
Out of Africa (Meryl Streep)

Here's others I've seen that also had strong female leading characters:
La Femme Nikita
Elektra
Mildred Pierce
I Want to Live
Handmaid's Tale
Frida
The Color Purple
Antonia's Line
Aliens
The Ballad of Little Jo
Bound
Boys Don't Cry
Boys on the Side
The Client
Contact
Courage Under Fire
Elizabeth
Fargo
Fire
First Wives Club
Gas, Food Lodging
GI Jane
Go Fish
I've Heard the Mermaids Singing
Introducing Dorothy Dandridge
The Joy Luck Club
Like Water for Chocolate
Nell
The Net
Now and Then
Paradise Road
Postcards from the Edge
The River Wild
Set it Off
She-Devil
Strangers in Good COmpany

There have been strong women in lead roles before, even if they don't use the word "feminist." Private Benjamin, The China Syndrome, and Erin Brockovich are good examples.

Because feminists aren't really taking over the world like all the terrified men said.

Probably the only truly feminist movie I've seen lately is _Mona Lisa Smile_. And it got s.hitty reviews, most of which immediately observed, "Hey, this movie was already done - STARRING MEN! This is a rip-off of the version with men in it." 'Cause, you know, the version with the men is the way it *should* have been done, the original, the default. What a joke.

Even when women do have lead roles, they're often annoyingly stereotypical or forced into some totally stupid genre (e.g., action - hence Lara Croft, unlike her male counterparts, must be half-naked while running about and acrobatically killing people because, you know, a female action hero just can't accomplish anything fully dressed). I take that back with reference to Trinity in _The Matrix_, but she's still a secondary love interest to the male lead. Or it's assumed that women like to watch stupid mushy romance, Hollywood continually attempting to shove Cinderella down women's throats.

You can.

Look no further than Dead or Alive, starring Jaime Pressly, Holly Valance and Devon Aoki as the lead stars. You even get to see a 5'5 Jaime Pressly kick the crap out of a 7 foot 365lbs Kevin Nash.

Predictably, this movie did poor in the box office, like most films with females as the lead.

You're not looking hard enough. There are lots of movies out there with a strong female role. Some where the female even kills lots of men! Yay?

I don't think there is a big market for alpha females...of course, someone could always do a movie about Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons.

Do you mean feminine lead roles?
What about Resident Evil, that girl kick the asses of a whole undead city, if that is the style of movie you're talking about. Also are:

The quick and the dead
The Forgotten
Monster's Ball
North County (I think you should see Charlize Theron here)
Monster
Anna and the King
The Others
The Hours
Chicago

All of those are strong, determined female roles.

See, lady? Women are not behind men in this!

Joan Crawford, Bette Davis and Katharine Hepburn were pioneering examples of strong female leads (feminists) in American cinema.
