After the split with Soviet Union, China considers itself a Third World country.

Additionally, the term is often used incorrectly, to describe a moderately developed country. This is most likely based on the misconception that the First World refers to the developed world, the Third World the developing world, and thus the Second World is an intermediate level between the two. To help with this problem, a newer term, Fourth World, was coined to refer to only the most impoverished nations, to distinguish more developed "third world" nations from completely undeveloped "third world" nations.

there are two schools of thought on this subject

first; Europe and it's satellites would be "old world" or first world

The America's are the 'new world' or second world

other countries which later came into the recognised, 'world' (China, India, etc., etc., ), can be classed as 'incognito' or third world

However, economically speaking

First world countries (as a GENERAL) rule export more than import and contribute more to world economy than most

Second world have a balance situation, without overly relying on imports or exports and giving as little/much as they take

third world countries are those that rely mainly on exports and help from the 'developed countries' .. taking all the above into account, and having visited China and India .. I would not classify either of them as third world, more likely First world, especially with their current stance of helping less well to do countries ..

third world countries would be Sudan, Ethiopia and others who are suffering natural and man made disasters

and then of course you have the political viewpoint

Western alliance, Eastern alliance and non- aligned .. China is non aligned so that would be third world

When I attended university (about 10 years ago) the designation of countries was changed to Over Developed and Lesser Developed. So I would say that China is a Lesser Developed nation based on it's social an economic abilities.

I'd classify it as a second world country. It has an industry of a first world country, but it doesn't have a strict set of human rights.

Of course, I'm no official, so don't take my word on it.

The classifications "First/2nd/third international" originated interior the chilly conflict era: First international: u . s ., Western Europe, and allies 2nd international: u.s., eastern Europe, and allies third international: Smaller, undeveloped or coming up worldwide locations who performed little or no place interior the chilly conflict After the top of the chilly conflict, those classifications have fallen out of style, yet China became at one time seen part of the 2nd international. it would probable be extra precise to call China a coming up united states or something like that than to aim to categorise it applying this technique.
