A restraining order is a beefed-up no contact order, which keeps them a certain distance from you and prohibits other activities and places, if ordered by the judge.
If it's been 6 years, then yes, you need to start over again and file for a new restraining order.

most restraining orders expire. But since he's returning to harrass you, you may be able to get either a very long order, or a permanent one.

A no contact order means he cannot phone, mail, e-mail or contact you in any way. A restraining order means he can't so those things, plus he cannot be within a certain distance of you or your home and place of work.

I'm sorry you're having issues again, I hope it is quickly resolved.

Restraining orders don't usually have a time limit, unless the judge set one. Go to your local court and ask if it is still enforceable.
