Or does it just entertain people who already agree with the political viewpoint of the comedian?

I think the only thing that changes people's minds when it comes to politics is life experience.

I think that it just entertains people who already agree with the viewpoint. People that don't agree can still laugh of course, if it is truly funny, but mostly comedians that play off of political viewpoints are usually just rehashing the same material over and over and it starts to come off as pointless and used. I mean, who hasn't already heard jokes about presidents being stupid? Every term since the day I was born has had comedians making fun of a president. Find something original, and it might be funny.

I'm taking a persuasion class, and this is what Richard Perloff says about it...

Comedy only helps when the person listening isn't invested in the topic, so while some people may change their mind based on the Colbert Report or the Daily Show, they're probably not the kind of person who is going to get out and vote.
People who care about the issues (and are therefor more likely to vote) will already have their opinions made and solidified, so comedic jests at their beliefs won't change their minds.

Shows or comedians that have a persist bias probably don't but when the entertainment shows like the tonight show mocks politicians it can matter. Jokes about Fords clumsiness, Quayle's spelling, Dukakis in tank, Kerry on water skis, Clinton and Monica, or Bush being dumb has a political effect. Campaigns spend effort publicizing awkward moments of opponents in the hope that one will catch on and diminish their standing with voters. If it did not work the campaigns wouldn't do it.

It is probably entertaining to most people. This type of entertainment helps ease one's worries about whatever is being lambasted. Whether you are for or against whatever it is, as a human being you should be able to see the satire and enjoy it. You know it's just entertainment and hopefully won't get all bent out of shape if it's your political party or favourite politician who is the butt of the joke. Also, if it actually changes your mind, your mind couldn't have been very firmly set if it could be swayed so easily. Enjoy!!

Hi.... Yes it does. The element of comedy releases a relaxed atmosphere that can sway many with a political point of view that does not agree with the comedians. A good comedian can with laughter, enable us to laugh at ourselves and get his/or her message out to the public and open a door for each of us to check and ascertain that we have all the facts.... I have watched Bill Maher... don't really care for him..... But... Through his comedic/satirical comedy he has changed my mind about a few strong issues that we are all facing.~

Yeah, I think ridicule ends up being a very powerful tool.

In fact, I think the advent of the Jon Stewart show may have been a significant factor to the fall of the Republicans in the November 2006 election. Remember, they lost the Senate by one vote in a very very close state. It wouldn't take too many kids staying up to watch Stewart to change that election.

Consider that if they weren't watching him, they might not have voted.

Im sure it does. Even though we laugh about it, its as close to accuracy you can ask for. We are all entitled to one's opinion on whatever issue being asked or faced. Make sure to know your facts and the comedian is merely a medium.

Only those who agree with the comedian or who can laugh at themselves honestly will watch that comedian.

But the thing about most people, is that they want comfort, reassurance of their ideals. That's why most liberals flock to comedy central and conservatives flock to...wherever they go for comedy. I would say FOXNews, but they take that seriously...
