Sorry, but avg will not do the job.
This is not a problem at all. Here's what you need to do.
1st, don't waste your time with AVG, true sword, spybot, ad aware, CA, spyhunter, superantispyware, avast, panda, kaspersky, spyware blaster, bitdefender, spyware guard, windows defender or anything of the sort. Stay away from anything that is FREE when it comes to spyware and antivirus. There is a reason why they free. They are NOT good.
2nd, You need some of the best software out there. Norton Systemworks is very good. That's the only good software from Norton. I wouldn't recommend Norton Internet security, its not that great. Now the best software you should get is Webroot AntiVirus With AntiSpyware & Firewall, formally known as Webroot's Spysweeper with Anti-virus, this software is too good and gets better everyday. This is Elite software. It blocks over 455,000 definition threats, which contain multiple fringerprints with each(you can do the math). No other software can compete with that or come close for that matter. It catches everything: viruses, spyware, adware, malware, root kits, keyloggers, trojans, worms, and anything else. It also has active shields and a Firewall which learns from your useage. I've used them all and it is 2nd to none.
3rd, after you install and update the software, since its in your system you will have to turn off system restore and then go into safe mode and run the scan and eliminate the virus. then after removal, reboot and turn system restore back on.
4th, (Optional) Now if you for some reason don't go for Webroot's software. I recommend a Firewall from Zone Alarm, their free version is so good. Or you can buy their Pro version, but the free version will do more than the job.
5th, any probs during or after you do all this, send me an e-mail or IM. I guarenDAMNtee my answers and will help you in person from IM if needed.

Well, it depends. Are you willing to pay for an antivirus program or you rather stick with free antivirus programs? If you want to stick with the free version, I recommend Antivir or Avast. Both programs are free for personal use. They both have good detection rates. You can find both programs at www.filehippo.com

There is an excellent article which reviews all 3 programs. The articles "Review: Free Antivirus Software" written by Mary Landesman, a technical writer for PC World Magazine can be found at http://antivirus.about.com/od/antivirussoftwarereviews/a/freeav.htm

If you are willing to spend some money, there are several antivirus programs which have consistently outperform AVG, including: F- Secure, Symantec, McAfee and BitDefender. Please see PC World Magazine's article at http://www.pcworld.com/article/124475-1/article.html

For most users, AVG is adequate. I like the program because it doesn't use alot of computer resources. The commercial antivirus programs tend to use alot of resources and can cause even "fast" computers to slow down.

i am a computer science major and have been doing network admin for the US Army for five years. On personal computers I always install avast. http://www.avast.com ! AVG is a preference of many people as well. They are both free and are both great anti virus programs. Other than those two, i would not reccomend anything else! Remember that they are both anti virus software! That means that they are not spyware removal or anti-spyware software programs... you will need these as well!

I think the free AVG updates later than the bought one. I had a virus discovered during a trial of the full AVG, several months later the Free AVG found the same virus, in the same place.

I've successfully used Avast 4-Home for nearly 5 years without a virus getting past it. Is it better than AVG? I don't know, I never used AVG because I've been so satisfied with Avast.

I am a Free Avira Antivirus user who switched from AVG, because i felt the same was as you.
download the free version here
http://free-av.com/
note: it is just as good as the premium version in detecting viruses, but just lacks some PREMIUM features (like firewall, faster update, donation, ad-lessness etc.)
as you can see here
http://www.av-comparatives.org/seiten/ergebnisse_2007_05.php
avira found the most viruses in the latest test of av-comparitives.org along with fortinet antivirus which doesnt have free version

it didn't receive an "Advanced" certificate like the NOD32 (the best in my opinoin) because of its false detections, but hey! it;s better than not detecting anything at all!

and lastly it scans your files whenever it is read or written, so you don't have to worry about viruses even when copying files in different locations

You are 100% correct!!

AVG Anti-Virus is crap!

Mostly noobs, the naive, the computer illiterate, and children use AVG Free. People of their ilk love AVG because they say it is easy to use and almost never bothers them with any pop-ups or warnings. Of course AVG Free never bothers them, it hardly ever finds any virus to warn them about!

In test,
http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=82&mnu=82
after test,
http://www.av-comparatives.org/
after test,
http://antivirus.about.com/od/antivirussoftwarereviews/gr/avgfree.htm
after test ,
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showpost.php?p=891307&postcount=1,
after test,
http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,130869-page,1/article.html,
after test,
http://techsupportalert.com/issues/al_current.htm#Section_0,
after test,
http://winnow.oitc.com/AntiVirusPerformance.html
etc. etc. etc, ad nauseam, AVG fares poorly.

AVG has proven itself to be a miserable performer at best. Missing almost 20%, while trying to detect known malware, in some tests. Not to mention almost non-existent heuristic detection and infrequent "once-a day" updates.

AVG. = Average, at best!

There are much better free anti-virus alternatives such as Avria Anti-Vir:

and Avast:

I really like AVG. My boyfriend is a computer science major, and that is what he (as well as all his classmates prefer.) Plus, it's FREE!
