Spanish explorers, starting with Columbus, were originally searching for a water route to Asia. Finding the Americas instead, the gold and silver attracted more Spanish to the land. Spain wanted the wealth of land, plus Catholic missionaries came to the New World to convert the native people to Christianity.

Spain, France, England, Italy... all European countries colonized other portions of the world for the same basic reasons: for the revenue of any crops grown, any valuable minerals found there, for the purpose of expanding their territories. Colonization meant more money, richer countries.
