Don't make an excuse, most anyone can see through them. Let say it is a job interview. If you were doing the interview would you want to hire someone who made an excuse for tardiness? Companies today are looking for responsible people and you have the opportunity to show whoever that you are and can handle responsibilities. Get off on the right foot!

I learned through work that excuses are weak. Being honest and apologizing for the error or inconvenience is a stronger approach. People respect and trust you more if they know you'll take responsibility and tell the truth.

I'll say the truth and will promise them that I won't repeat the same again.....I think saying the real thing is better than excuses........

I wouldn't give any excuses. I'll just tell them the truth. I'm bad at excuses anyway :P

Unless you actually HAVE an excuse... (car died, house fire, etc.etc..), I would not offer one. Apologize for being late...
Be sincere. Be brief.
Never let it happen again.
If all else fails, go with the truth. It has a "ring" like nothing else. }:>
Hi! Nice to see you!

I wouldn't give an excuse, but I would apologize & try very hard not to have it happen again the next time.

I would tell the boss I came down with a terrible stomach bug and had the worst diarrhea you could possibly imagine. The boss will never question that :)

Oftentimes, your best move is to offer no excuse whatsoever.
Apologize respectfully for your tardiness, and move confidently on.

p.s. Whatever you do, don't lie about it.
