If it's a U tube with right angle bends, you could use a tube brush.
It looks something like this ........

What you do is to thread the flexible wire part of the thing through your plastic tube, when the end of the wire comes out the other end, pull the wire to get the brush throught the tube and it will clean the inside of the tube. Do it a couple of time and the tube will be clean.

They make brushes especially for hard-to get-to parts like that. The brush part is relatively small, but the "handle" is either a flexible metal coil or a piece of thicker flexible plastic. Thread the end without the brush through, then pull the brush through while twisting to clean all around the inside. Repeat as many times as necessary.
If you have really stubborn algae inside, soak it in a dilute bleach solution (1 part bleach to 19 parts water) for 15 minutes, then rinse well.

If you're cleaning an Aquaclear filter the only way to clean the "U" shaped tube is with a flexible brush. You can usually find sets of these brushes at pet stores,or from mail order houses, or laboratory supply places.

Clean the plastic all you want, but do not clean the filter pads, as the bacteria on them IS your filter. If you have 2 pads, rinse one in cool water just enough to unclog the openings. If tou have just one, just rinse about 1/2 of it so not to mess up the biological filtration.
