hmm there is alot to think about here...saltwater are more expensive and require more attention...freshwater is cheaper...the person who said no gold fish is pretty accurate, goldfish get to 6 inch or more..so only a large tank would be good for them..as far as pooping..lol i dont know ive seen oscars and gourmies do their share.if you do fresh water ..youve also got to think about what type of fish, community fish or more agressive fish and which one will get along.also when putting your fish tank up make sure you do NOT use any form of soap to clean it..even the littlest soap can kill a fish.also make sure you put some form of chlorine/chorimine remover, let your tank run for at least 24 hrs.when you put the fish in ,let the bag set for about 15 min.,open the bag ,take 3-5 tablespoons of water out of the bag...and throw it away.take about 3-5 tablespoons out of your aquarium and put it in the bag,do it every 15 min.for about an hour or so,this will help the fish adjust to your tanks ph and such, after that take your net and take the fish out of the bag.do NOT empty water into your aquarium as you do not want to contaminate your water.by the way fresh water fish also need aqaurim salt to help them out.

Definitely freshwater. The start-up costs are a lot less, and they are a lot easier to manage. I would start with a few "community" fish like tetras, gouramis and angel fish. They are pretty and easy to maintain.
If you want to show your kids the "circle of life" get guppies, mollies and swordfish. They are cheap and they birth live young. You can really get a tank full of fish in a few months that way.
Also I think guppies are really pretty.

If you are just starting out get freshwater. It requires alot less maitinence. Don't get goldfish . They poop alot and it makes it hard to clean.
