I had planned to get an iPod nano, but then I found out about Zen and Zune. Which should I get and why?

I personally prefer the Zune over the iPod. Here's why:

1. Better support - All Zune devices get the same update. Whether it was v1, or 2.0, they all get the same support. Apple doesn't give the same update to all their music players however.

2. Bigger screen - Compare the small squinty iPod screen to a large Zune screen. Much better for videos.

3. durability - My Zune has lasted with me since last December of 06'. Most iPod users by 2-3 every year.

4. scratch-less - I have never seen any significant scratches on my Zune. However, there are numerous on my iPods.

5. Better UI - where as iPod's is rather stiff, Zune's have a virtual 2D UI, that's rather impressive. It's easy and quik to navigate on.

6. FM Radio - like local news? talk radio? concert ticket contests? new music? Zune has radio. iPod doesn't.

7. Personalization - You can change the background pic on your home screen with any of your pictures. There's many Zune accessories out there, and you can even get a laser-etching.

8. Subscription service "option" - If you're not a big fan of buying music individually, then subscription is for you. For one flat monthly fee, you can have as much access as to any music you want on Zune Marketplace. It's like "renting" music for a month. About $15. Or you could buy songs individually.
9. better integration with the Xbox 360 - the new Zune update will promise better integration with the Xbox 360 than the iPod.

10. View in landscape mode - you can see videos and pictures on landscape mode, so it's like a widescreen.

11. Better included headphones - where the iPod's headphones have horrible quality, the ones with Zune aren't so bad. They even have a magnetic clip.

12. WiFi - you can share music, videos, podcasts, and many things with it. You can also connect to your computer directly with the WiFi, and update it that way.

13. Same price as iPods - Same price as regular iPods of the same specs, but includes more bang for your buck.

The new Zune comes at $250 for 80GB (Zune 80)
The new flash Zunes come in 4GB or 8GB (Zune 4 or Zune 8)
They still also sell the v1 Zune for around $199 for 30GB. (Zune 30)

Haven't touched a Zen, but between iPod and Zune, I'll go with iPod. Microsoft's Zune just doesn't "feel" right when I've compared the two devices. Apple's iPod has gone through several versions already and continues to push the portable music/video player market. I also find the iTunes music store to be well stocked compared to other services.

iPod certainly is not without complaint. The closed nature of the device (lockout from other music suppliers) is annoying, but then most device manufacturers do something to lock you in.

Really the choice will come down to personal opinion for you. Go into one of the stores and compare the look, feel, and functionality for yourself and see which you like. The pricing is competitive for each and while some have extra features, consider if you will actually use those features and how those features will affect battery life (i.e. wireless capabilities of the Zune).
