ok first you want to distribute then put number part aside and put y variable on the other side.
How?
(-5*4y) +(-5*-9)-y = (-4*y)+ (-4*-4)
-20y + 45 -y = -4y + 16
-20y -y + 45 = -4y + 16
-21y + 45 = -4y + 16
we minus 45 to get y on left side,
-21y + 45 - 45 = -4y + 16 - 45
-21y + 0 = -4y -29
we plus 4y on both side to get y on the left side,
-21y + 4y = -4y + 4y - 29
-17y = -29
divide 17 on both side to get rid of the constant and get y
y = 29 / 17 =
this is the final answer, in decimals, 1.71
Answer: y = 1.71 or 29/17

Lets see - you have 1.7.
-5(4y - 9) - y = -4(y - 4)
Firstly, distribute the -5 and -4.
-20y + 45 - y = -4y + 16
Next, get all y's on one side, constants on the other.
-17y = -29
Lastly, just divide by -17.
y = 29/17
Yup, I got the same as you - but you usually round 5's up.
