The father would make this decision. If he is very distraught and preoccupied with his wife's death and funeral preparation the baby might be cared for by the nurses in the hospital for an extra day or two.

Or family could take over, like a grandmother or aunt or something.

Otherwise, the father can take the baby home whenever he wants. He is the father and guardian.

The same thing as with any other baby keep it in the nursery. Since the mother is dead they teach the father how to care for it. Usually one of the parents steps up or a sibling ( GIRL ) or aunt to take care of the baby and make sure the father is okay after grieving for their wife's death. The family can be a tremendous help in a hard time such as this. Usually it is very hard on the father especially if it is a little girl. I know my mother lost my sister before I was born and also my little brother when I was about 8 years old. It was hard on my parents and still is. They always remember the babies on their birthdays. I can't imagine losing a parent and being left with a little newborn. It must be very traumatic. You should talk to your mom or dad about it. Get an adults perspective on the situation. I can't really tell you a lot because I have never been married or had children yet. GOOD LUCK !!!

if there is no medical reason to keep the baby in the hospital, then right away.

usually hospital stays are more for the mother's recovery than the baby's. Once the baby has been checked out by the pediatrician and all the stats have been noted, there is no reason to keep the baby there.

While the dad is making arrangements for the funeral or is otherwise occupied, the baby is in the nursery. Family members can still visit and bond with the baby.

It's not uncommon, also, for grandparents to take the baby while the dad is dealing with the death of his wife.

It stays in the nursery of the hospital until they feel that it is okay to release the baby into the father's care. The baby will obviously be bottle fed since wet nurses aren't readily available these days. They will probably also talk to the father about things that he will need to do to take care of a newborn by himself.

I'm sure they keep the baby in the hospital for a couple days for observation, as they would any newborn baby.
Hopefully that never has to happen to a mother!

It sounds like you are afraid...they would keep it in the nursery until someone, hopefully the father or a grandparent claimed it.

My husband was with me and our baby the whole time we were in the hospital. I'm sure he would've been there if I wasn't, doing what he did, viz: being her mattress, changing her diapers, everything but nursing. There is no reason a man can't take care of a baby, for heavens' sakes!
