Each game is a stand alone game. Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall each take place on their own continent. They all have different game content. Buy one to try it out and if you enjoy the game it's worth it to have all 3. With all 3 games, your characters can travel to any continent and learn more skills.

Eye of the North is a new expansion for Guild Wars. It requires that you already own one of the other 3 games.

Guild Wars: Prophecies is the original release.
It's the first "chapter" in the Guild Wars saga. You don't need any of the other chapters, though I highly recommend Guild Wars: Nightfall and Guild Wars: Eye of the North in addition.
The heroes mechanic is worth it.

Yeah, prophesies is what they sort of renamed the original game when Factions was prepping up, so as to differentiate it from the entire collection of GW games they were planning and make it a bit more clear that each of the expansions did not require the original GW.
