I cant seem to setup a home network. Right now both PCs are setup fine to go online etc. I have a desktop that is connected to the interent and a laptop that is wireless which is connected to the router. Basically I want to print from the laptop. I dont think when I set the router up I had set a network up. On the desktop I created something in My Network Places on windows XP for shared docs but for some reason on the laptop I cant connect to it. The laptop is XP Professional, so how can I connect the laptop to the desktop to print? (The printer is connected to the desktop)

Use the network setup wizard, in control panel. You need to do this on each computer. It will ask you for a work group name, put them all in the same work group.
You must have the computer running that is connected to the printer, and it must allow printer sharing. In the future, you might want to get a network printer, which you can use from any computer connected to the network. A print server can connect a non-network enabled printer the the router, also.

The easy way is to share the printer on the desktop machine, then search for the shared printer from the laptop.
I can't give a step-by-step because I'm not running Xp here, but that method should get you there, as long as both machines connect to the same router/hub.
It's something like
- Start - Control Panel - printers - right-click the printer and choose properties. Somewhere in the properties is the option to share this printer.
good luck.

Your desktop and laptop need to be in the same workgroup. Right click on "My Computer" and choose "Properties". Choose the tab marked "Computer Name".
If the workgroups are different, change one of them so they match.
On the desktop, open Control Panel / Printers, right click on the printer and choose "Sharing". Share the printer.
On the laptop, add a network printer, and the shared printer should appear.
If you have that working, shared folders should work too.

From the computer that the printer is connected go to control panel>printers and faxes.Right click on the printer select sharing and share the printer. Then map the printer on the network places. Then on the other computer map the printer too and you are done.If you can't see the printer in the laptop ,enter the address manually.(like \\server\printer name)

You need to make sure that Network Sharing is enabled on the machine with the printer. You also need to enable sharing on the printer on that machine.
You might also want to make sure that both machines belong to the same workgroup, although this isn't essential.

You have to get a printer server to print something from a computer that is not directly connected to it. Or you could save the file you want to print to a jump drive and load it up on your computer that is connected to the printer and print it.
