Money hasn't always been issued by countries. In the United States, for most of its history, money was issued either by banks or the states and colonies. In Europe, many of the European Union states have also formed a monetary union. This permits German workers to work in France without having to convert their wages every two weeks. Imagine the impact of being paid in Deutschemarks and having it devalue compared to the Franc. You would instantly take a pay cut. This limited the ability of labor to move between national markets and restricted pay levels, productivity levels and national wealth. It also was highly restrictive of sales. Imagine being able to shop in Alsace-Lorain. Depending upon the relative values of national currencies you could shop in any number of countries, but shopkeepers couldn't control their own destinies since the could be wiped out by a change in the values of currencies.

So they abolished, except the United Kingdom, national currencies in favor of a single unified currency.

all countries that are a member of the EU (european union) use the euro. The European Union currently has 27 member states: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. so all those countries use the euro. The good thing about that is if you're going between any of those countries, you'll only have to exchange money when you first arrive. the current value of 1 euro is about .69 dollars. all other countries use their own form of currency. so if you go to a country other than the 27 EU countries, you'll have to exchange money again.
