A gemologist is not the same as a geologist though they are related.

The professional training of gemologists is generally that of the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) http://www.gia.edu/3954/gia_home_page.cfm

Academic training in business, studio art, or geology is helpful but the specific training is usually industry based and not college based.

The GIA offers their own Bachelor of Business Administration degree as well as a number of certificate programs. http://www.gia.edu/education/32198/bachelor_of_business_administration.cfm

That would be a geology degree, or more specifically a mineralogy degree.
