i set the nozzle, to stop automatically, and got inside my car, and it never stopped!! 74.00 later i look and jump out of the car to find gas literally pouring out everywhere, i was almost speechless. is it my fault for not standing by the pump, even though they have that option as a "convience", or was the gas staion at fault??

why do they have the option to set it, if you have to stand there?

I'm sure the station is going to say that it is your responsibility to stay with the nozzle while fueling. The state that I am in, it is a law that you cannot leave the nozzle unattended. Did they make you pay for it? Are they making you pay for the clean up? (That can get expensive!)

You are not supposed to get back into your car. You are supposed to (and in some states required to) stand by the nozzle to prevent an overfill and possible accident. Think of the $74 as a lesson ... if the gas had contacted a hot muffler or tailpipe, you might not have lived to complain about it.

Although i'm not sure about MI state law, i do feel that if you contact that gas stations corporate headquarters, you may find that they will investigate the station. I'm not sure if you will get your money back, however gas stations have been know to rig their pumps....we had one by us that was charging more than what the pump said....they got busted and shut down.

I do agree that you should have stayed outside of the vehicle....i don't trust gas stations, and i stand out there just for that reason.

I feel for ya:)

Yes that stinks but it's your fault. Never done it before but I can't fill up. I get like 30 bucks in gas cause once I over flowed the tank....Been scared since.

I guess that sitting is good for like if you are getting 20 bucks. Plus they or most the time the stop once you reach the amount unless you go in and tell them you are filling up.

This is why I have my cousins to fill my tank up.

it is 100% your fault, you set the speed of the flow of gas in your tank, you are the attendant at the pump,(for self service )the station could legally charge you for cleanup, you are responsible for your action, sorry.

You were at fault because you did not get the nozzle in far enough for the sensor to shut it off. and they have signs not responsible for spills.

As a former gas station cashier, it is my sad duty to tell you it was your own fault. It's your responsibility to watch the pump.
Most stations will even post it. Sorry.

It's your fault. You're always supposed to mind the pump... it was never intended for people to go anywhere away from the pump, even to wash their windshields.

i would say you were at fault only because you didnt pre-pay it...uhm if you had prepaid it and it didnt stop it would be the gas stations fault. Sorry hun that sucks so hard
