Are you kidding? complete power? GW? what are you smoking? Our great Constitution was designed specifically to prevent totalitarianism!!!

Robespierre is an example of the leader of the winning party who didn't become a dictator, since he ended up dead by his own tool of execution.

One of the best modern examples I think is Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua. He was the leader of the Sandanistas and took power after a coup in 1979. He was an important figure in the next decade: he ruled as a member of the military junta then went on to become president. He was defeated in a free election in 1990. I think he is an excellent example of a socialist democrat; someone who believes in fighting corruption, supporting individual freedoms such as religion and speech, equality of all Nicaraguans and a hatred of the poverty that shackled his country. He was, and continues to be, a supporter of the redistribution of wealth so that so much is not held by the very few. He has really softened his Marxist views and now believes a freer market must exist if his country is too create more wealth in order to support his ambitious social and economic policies. Even though he was defeated in the 1990 election it showed his commitment to democracy. While Ortega was not in the public eye for over a decade he was active in Nicaragua. He ran again just recently and was elected once again as president.

The leaders of the French Revolution did not end up seizing total power. Of course this let Napoleon do it some time later, so it was temporary.
