I don't know what it means, but I have it on my list... for a GIRL!
Sorry - I'm not into Emma and Ava and all the other top 10 names that EVERYBODY keeps naming their kid.

I trhink it is a yucky name to give a child but here is the info you asked for.
The boy's and girl's name Ripley \r(i)-pley, rip-ley\ is of Old English origin, and its meaning is "shouting man's meadow". Place name.
Ripley has 2 variant forms: Ripleigh and Riply.
Ripley is a very rare male first name and a very popular surname (source: 1990 U.S. Census). Displayed below is the baby name popularity trend for the boy's name Ripley. Click here to compare Ripley with related baby names

i think as long as its not your name u should keep ur nose out Tom Matt and Leanne are all good names but every other girl or boy is called one of those names! I personally hate common names and want my son or daughter to have a name that no-one else has... saying that i would never name my daughter something awful like Danone or Prada..I like pretty names, that you look at written down and it just looks nice my favourite girl names are Talia, Tamsyn and Amalie, Gabrielle, Jasmine, Isabelle, Belle, Roxanne. Boys are: Jackson, Noah, Kaedyn, Blake, Taryn, Cole, Harrison, Gabriel, Darian, Kayvan, Ashton and Asher.. parents nowadays dont wanna go for boring common names so the kid goes to school and there are 7 other kids in the same class called Matthew!

I have heard of Ripley before, an australian news presenter named one of her premature twin daughters this. I think she named the other twin Cameron.

Ripley is the name that Sigourney Weaver went by in Alien, although it was really her surname.
From a surname which originally came from a place name that meant "strip clearing" in Old English.
On a personal note, I like it.

I don't know of anyone with that name. It doesn't sound feminine at all though. I think of "Ripley's Believe It Or Not Museum" when I first read it.
