first off, convert the first mixed number into an improper fraction, which would be 7/4

then, you find a common denominatior, which is 20

that gives you 35/20 - 16/20

and that is 19/20

you have to have a common denominator so use 20. Multiply the three and four in the first fraction by five. You get
1 15/20. You multiply 4/5 by 4. You get 16/20.
1 15/20-16/20.
Next you borrow a whole--which in this case is 20. You have 35/20-16/20= 19/20
