The technology to replace oil has been around for a very long time.
Can send a man to the moon and make microchips and manipulate dna but car engine has remained the same for 100 years.

Studies show already that some of these major 100 year oil fields are down on production by 5% already so with 6 billion people wanting the good life that we have had for the last 50 years to our selves oil will be used at many time the rate that it has been in the last 20 years. So you could be looking at major shortages in a time period of maybe 25 years. The countries with oil reserves will be the haves and all of the others will be in the have nots and that's when wars between the haves and have nots will start.
If you think we don't need crude oil you are so wrong, this country would come to halt in months without it.

MyMystery, the problem with people like you is you just think of it as a product that is used to fuel vehicles. You fail to realize that without it you wouldn't have over 90% of the products in your home. Other than the fact that the things you buy had to be delivered by truck and without oil there would be no fuel for those trucks at the present time (yes, biodiesel can fuel the trucks, but we aren't set up for that on a mass nation wide level). But, what you are failing to realize is all the plastics you have in your home, or use in your life.
The person asking the question is correct, many will die, however we would find a way, we had a way before and we would find a way after.

We are overdependent on oil.
We could survive without it, but our lives would resemble third world nations without it.
That is not necessarily a bad thing, if it means helping the environment.

Its because thats how our economy is set up. Form our electricity from oil fired electrical plants to the 18 wheelers that deliver food and cargo across the land, to the diesel fired ships that bring goods from all over the world, and last, but certainly not least, to the gas you put in your car so you can go to work, too make money to buy the goods that where brought in my ship and 18 wheeler. thats how the economy works ................... if you have a job that is!
PS Fldjhk or whatever your name is, where did ya pull that "oil is gone in 30 years "arbitrary number From? your Butt Hole? LOL Oil will be here, and plentiful in 30 years. You where the easiest thumbs down Ive given today, for sheer stupidity if nothing else LOL

Its only necessary because we have made it so.
a technology driven civilization needs energy to function. We opted to use petroleum because of its simplicity, now we are suffering the consequences.
We need to make a serious dedicated effort to drastically cut down on our use of petroleum products for energy and replace them with other sources of energy.
We must do this, for our security, our economy, and our enviorment.
I guess MyMysteryId thinks the food in his grocery store just magically appears there.

Our economy would fall apart, thus affecting the world. Crops would go unharvested, because the machinery needed to harvest and transport them would be idle. People would have no jobs, no money and no food supply, so not only the US, but the world would fall into complete anarchy, and millions would die.

It's necessary today, but we have to prepare for a world without oil. It will probably happen within the lifetime of people born today. We should have a Marshall Plan to produce alternative energy sources, and this will have to include nuclear.
Fertilizer is made from petroleum.
It's frightening how uninformed many of the answers are to this question.

Yes we have made ourselves dependent on it and it's up to us to ween ourselves off it but that won't happen without new regulations regarding home and business construction (require solar features) and encourage retrofitting, and raising MPG standards for vehicles considerably.
