There are several departure points for the Catalina Express. San Pedro and Long Beach are the busiest. The Express will take you to either Avalon, or Two Harbors at the Isthmus.
You might try hanging around the docks and offer your services as an unpaid deck hand.
The seaplanes were discontinued years ago, but there is still helicoper services. Don't just get a boat and head 180 degrees. That's the kind of thing that keeps the Coast Guard busy.

you can catch the Catalina ferry boat out of long beach or you can fly from the long beach airport via seaplane which will land in the water and taxi ashore at the island. Or, you can buy a boat and take a heading of 180 degrees magnetic from the long beach light which will take you right into Avalon bay on the island.
