My daughter is almost 9 months old and does not hold her own bottle when I feed her. I don't really care if she does or not, I enjoy holding and snuggling her while feeding. My MIL and SIL were SO UPSET today when they saw she wasn't holding her bottle. My SIL said that it is bad for her development if she doesn't hold it?? Is this true?
I really don't care if she doesn't hold it, I want her off the bottle by a year anyways. She does hold her sippy cup and drink from that on her own.

No, in fact having her hold the bottle can increase the risks of ear infections.

Next time your MIL and SIL make a big deal out of it ask then what exactly they think breastfed babies do? They never hold a bottle and many breastfed babies still manage to grow up and go to Harvard or play professional sports.

Just hold her and snuggle her during feeds, it is important to her development to have that time with you -and trust me as she walks more and gets more active that may be the only time you get.

My daughter was the same way. She held her cup but never the bottle. I just enjoyed holding her and feeding her the bottle while it lasted because at 1yr the bottles were out the door. Don't worry about them enjoy the bottle time while you can. My daughter now at 14mo hold her sippy cup without handles all day long when she needs to.

Give the poor kid a break! Tell your SIL to where to stuff her opinions. I'm surprised she holds her sippy cup and drinks from it; that takes more coordianation than a bottle.

That is all bull. Enjoy holding and cuddling your daughter while you feed her...that's the best way to do it!
When she is ready she will do all of the other things. Every child is on their own schedule...why rush this most wonderful of times for a child?

Sometimes they don't do it because you nursed them for a while and they aren't use to holding a bottle. If you breastfed her, then that is probably why. I wouldn't worry. Enjoy your baby, this time will fly and before you know it she will be in Kindergarten.

She probably likes you holding it and being close. If she's holding her cup OK I wouldn't think there was anything to worry about. Enjoy her they grow up far too quick.x

it's your baby. if they don't like what you do with your child, then they can go away when you feed it. besides, it all varies on when a baby will hold a bottle. just give your baby time, it'll learn when its ready too.

Sounds like she likes the cuddling too.
As long as she is holding other things you don't need to worry.
