I'm wondering specifically about using an alias to register at hotels, et cetera. I don't wish to use an assumed name for business or any illegal activity, just for personal anonymity. I imagine that it's not too difficult (following the stereotype of the CEO getting hotel rooms for call girls) but I'm not sure how to go about it, if it is legal, and how to avoid leaving a paper trail.

Again, this is not for anything illegal, just wondering whether it is legal itself.

You can use any name you want for non-business non-legal non-govt interactions -- like a knickname or whatever.

But, businesses are generally not required to allow you to use such a pseudonym -- they have the right to refuse to do business with you unless you prove your identity.

And for any legal or govt-related activity, you must use your legal name.

Its almost impossible to do.......hotels require you to either pay by credit card which would have your real name on it....if you pay by cash they require a picture ID...... You can still get away with when picking up girls in bars though
